Ames room - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
An Ames room is a distorted room that is used to create an optical illusion.
An Ames room is constructed so that from the front it appears to be an ordinary cubic-shaped room, with a back wall and two side walls perpendicular to each other and perpendicular to the horizontally level floor and ceiling.
However, this is a trick of perspective and the true shape of the room is trapezoidal: the walls are slanted and the ceiling and floor are at an incline, and the right corner is much closer to the front-positioned observer than the left corner (or vice versa).

 Ames Room
Since the two visible corners of the room subtend the same visual angle to the eye through the peephole, the two corners appear to be the same size and distance away.
The retinal image produced by the distorted room is identical with (and therefore indistinguishable from) that of a normal cubic room.
This suggests that in addition to one's perception of the cubic nature of the room, a mental expectation of the room's shape is also formed separate from one's perception of it.

An Ames room, named after the American ophthalmologist Adelbert Ames, Jr., is constructed in such a way that a person seen walking about the room appears to be growing and shrinking rather than approaching and receding.
The trick behind an Ames room is that it appears cubic when viewed monocularly from a special viewing point but its true shape is actually trapezoidal.

Ames Room Video Illusion - Mighty Optical Illusions
It is called Ames Room, and I posted some photos of it already in the past.
Ames constructed a trapezoidal room for the observer to view by gazing through a peephole - in reality one corner of the room is much farther from the observer than the other corner is. When viewed from a particular angle, the room appears very normal.
I went to this science museum and it had a room like that but the bigger side was bigger and the smaller side was smaller.

SkiP v2 - Ames Room   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The Ames room is built using perspective cues to fool the eye of the observer.
Due to the assumed perspective, the observer "builds" a cubical room, while the real room is physically made with a tilted back-wall (and a trapezoidal distorted checkerboard, which looks like a normal squared checkerboard when viewed near the CS locus).
Thus, in the example here, the boy on the RHS looks like a pygmy in comparison to his "giant sister" on the LHS (in reality, she is much closer to the CS/us than the perspective cues let us assume).

The size illusion in the Ames Room is an example of the errors that our perceptual system can make when presented with images that permit the system to use its shortcuts (heuristics) to make decisions about the visual scene.
The knowledge of the rules of perspective and the assumption of rectangular architecture forces the visual system to construct the apparent size difference (this way of drawing conclusions about what is seen in the retinal images, is called 'unconscious inference').
It's interesting to note that, with our experience and understanding of human size, one could argue that the individuals present in the room should be able to "force" the visual system into a more accurate perception of the room than it would make without their presence.

The Ames room is a specially constructed room that, due to size and shape constancy, looks normal.
When two people stand in the corners, one person looks small while the other appears a giant, and when a ball is rolled straight ahead, it appears to go uphill.
Research indicates that the Ames room illusion can be explained by the lack of cues normally used in three-dimensional shape constancy (Dorward & Day, 1997).
