Amha's specialty was "modern Ethiopian music," which set folk traditions—pentatonic scales, not-at-all-Euro vocal style and lyrical double entendres, complicated, irregular rhythms—against vamping American-style jazz and funk instruments.
Amha's recordings of Tigrigna music, code for the Eritrean independence movement as far as the Derg was concerned, comprise the newly released Vol.
The second volume leaves the Amha discography behind and jumps ahead to 1996, and to the stars of the Addis Ababa nightclubs ("azmaribéts") that didn't exist for 18 years, thanks to the Derg's curfew.

These raw sounds of Ethiopia were originally put out by Amha Records—a label founded in 1969 by 24-year-old Amha Eshèté in defiance of the Imperial decree requiring all music production and import to be overseen by the government-sanctioned national theater.
All tracks were recorded between 1969-1973 before the fall of Emperor Haile Selassie and vividly capture the spirit that flowered briefly and the music that drove it.
However, this age of the record was also the finale of Ethiopia's wild, happy years.

The fate of Amha Records was ultimately entwined with the Mengistu regime's crackdown on the Tigrigna-speaking peoples of Tigray and Eritrea.
While there's no talk yet of a comeback for Amha Records, Eshèté's supervision of the Éthiopiques series is not only keeping him busy with such tasks as hunting down the master recordings in Greece and restoring them, it's also at long last giving Ethiopian pop the hearing it deserves.
