An inspired stylization of grand opera, it contains music that is alive, varied and sensitive, notably the tenor romanza 'Cielo e mar' and the famous 'Suicidio', and that foreshadows aspects of late Verdi and of verismo opera.
Elsewhere Ponchielli's atmospheric colouring and symphonic treatment (I lituani, Il figliuol prodigo) show remarkable imagination and workmanship, despite his lack of a strong personality.

Callas's first entrance is quite discreet, Ponchielli gives the performer no opportunity for spectacular dramatics at this stage, though Callas's contributions later in the act are heartbreaking.
This is partly Ponchielli's fault for the tessitura of the role of Laura, but Barbieri seems too content to play the role like many of the other disappointed, mature women in her repertoire.
Though this will never be a library recording, this record is a must for all lovers of Callas and those interested in the recorded history of 'La Gioconda'.

Make this your first Giaconda, if still not convinced or prefer to hear other voices try (inevitably) Maria Callas on the EMI recording, her "rival" Renata Tebaldi on another recording, Eva Marton or Violeta Urmana with Placido Domingo in a more recent recording.
This is the sort of extravagance that Lucy and Ethel produced when they attempted to write an operetta.
But what fun it is! Ponchielli had a great gift for melody and any good rendering of the Gioconda/Laura/Enzo trio in the last act sends chills down the spine.
