The Amiot 143M was a late 1930s French medium bomber originally conceived as a "multiplace de combat": an all-purpose aircraft which would be used as bomber, reconnaissance aircraft and escort fighter.
Despite the ungainly two-tiered structure, slow and unmaneuverable performance, and obsolescent architecture, the Amiot 143M was a sturdy plane which was popular with its pilots.
The Amiot 143M served as a transport for the French in North Africa from 1941-1944.

Had the war gone on a little longer for France, it is likely that all of the Amiot 143M would have ended up in a training role, having been replaced by more modern bombers such as the Breguet 693.

In 1928, Amiot was one of four companies to respond to a requirement issued by the technical department of the French air ministry for a multi-seat warplane suitable for the day and night bomber, long-range reconnaissance and bomber escort roles.
The design was moderately advanced and based on an all-metal structure on a slab-sided fuselage of basically rectangular section with a forward section that was considerably deepened by the incorporation of a ventral gondola for the navigator/bombardier (forward), weapons bay (center) and radio operator/ventral gunner (rear).
Amiot had developed a number of alternative designs as the Amiot 141 with two 700 hp Lorraine Orian Vee engines, the Amiot 142 with teo 860 hp Hispano Suiza 12Ybrs Vee engines and the Amiot 143 with two 870 Gnome-Rhone 14K Mistral radial engines.

The Lioré et Olivier 451, at 307 mph, and the Amiot 354, at 298 mph, were the fastest medium bombers during the opening phases of World War II, outpacing the 1940 operational versions of the German Schnellbomber types--the Dornier Do 17K (255 mph), Heinkel He 111E (261 mph), and Junkers Ju 88A (292 mph).
Designed in 1931 and manufactured between 1935 and 1937, the Amiot 143M by 1940 had been left behind by the rapid evolution of aviation technology.

A friend of mine wrote that this Amiot 143 (Gnome et Rhone 14K engines, called aircraft "X" in RYAF documents) was flown to Yugoslavia by a Czech crew serving with the Armee de l'Air after occupation Czechoslovakia in 1939.
The crew then left for North Africa and the Amiot was flown to Kraljevo.

Nonetheless, the low number of D.520s in service in 1940 and the advancing German troops on the ground (you have to control airfields to operate your fighters) made that this good fighter could not change the overall balance of forces.
Roughly only 120 of the bomber/assault planes were modern ones (10 Amiot 354, 55 Lioré et Olivier 451, 45 Bréguet 691 or 693, 10 Potez 633) with 85 being operational.
A total of about 155 Amiot 351 and Amiot 354 have been available during May/June 1940, they carried about 2,200 kg bombs (2x 500 kg and 6x 200 kg).
