It may be inconvenient for these worthy scribes to put a human face on Amiot Metayer, but his personal history must be told to fully understand the impact of his murder.
Metayer was a native son of the coastal township of Gonaives in Haiti.
Metayer was also one of the pioneers of  “flash demonstrations” against the dictatorship where hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of Lavalas supporters would appear out of nowhere to protest for five minutes and then disappear before the military and their henchmen arrived on the scene.

Amiot Metayer, leader of the self-described Cannibal Army and one of President Aristide's most ruthless allies, can now walk the streets of Gonaives a free man after a Haitian magistrate last week canceled a long-standing (and long ignored) warrant for his arrest for arson and attempted murder.
Metayer had originally been arrested in a crackdown on the pro-Aristide gangs in mid-2002 - a belated but seemingly sincere attempt to smother simmering urban warfare between factions supporting and opposed to the Haitian president.
Metayer's arrest was also intended to mollify criticism, both in Haiti and abroad, that Aristide's regime, isolated like never before, is relying increasingly on thugs like Metayer in lieu of dwindling popular support.
