USATODAY.com - 'Amish in the City' wrongs a rite
Produced in secret to bypass controversy, and rushed onto the air as a TV stealth attack, Amish is a reality show perversion of "rumspringa" —; a rite of passage in which young Amish adults may elect to leave the community and experience life in the outside world.
The five Amish youths — three men and two women — are not plied with booze and hookers in an attempt to lure them into a life of modern sin.
And while the six city kids do treat their new roommates like freaks, the show's sympathy is clearly on the side of the Amish.

Amish in the City - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Amish in the City was an American reality television series by UPN.
The show assumes and promotes the disputed view that the practice of allowing Amish teenagers to enjoy freedom from the Amish religious code is a normal part of the Rumspringa, or "running around", period before they decide whether to join the Amish church.
Typically, nearly 90% of teenagers will end their Rumspringa with the choice to be baptized as Amish, however in the conclusion of the show all of the teenagers chose not to return to the Amish church.

'Amish in the City' has a dull edge on the competition | The San Diego Union-Tribune
"Amish in the City" partly comes from the mind of Daniel Laikind, developer and producer of "Devil's Playground," which looked at life among the Amish, who are devout Anabaptists.
But there's no prize money in "Amish in the City." In fact, the 11 participants are provided with everything they need, including money, during their experience in La-La Land.
Overall, the Amish come out on top as more intelligent, levelheaded, likable and interesting in "Amish in the City." This makes the show slightly more appealing than the rest of the vapid reality genre currently on the airwaves.

Because I wanted to pursue higher education-and because the Amish frown on such education--I shifted with my community's blessing to the Mennonite Church, which is part of the same Anabaptist history as the Amish.
Amish assume truthfulness in all things--thus, they do not present themselves in any manner that is not real.
Amish belief in this idea is so strong, for instance, that they object to swearing of oaths because they are committed to speaking truth always, not only under oath.

I think that the Amish have a better reason to want to do this show: They’ve never been exposed to western culture, and are on Rumspringa, the time in their lives when they step away from the Amish life and decide whether or not they want to be a part of that church or not.

The Amish, as was explained last night on the new UPN reality series "Amish in the City," don't do electricity, and they don't do the internal combustion engine.
The first, two-hour episode of "Amish in the City" is, in fact, harder on the six city kids with whom the five Amish youth are forced to live in a vast, postmodern nightmare house in the Hollywood Hills.
But finding six vapid city kids who fit the right cultural stereotypes, who were pretty enough and dull enough and vain enough to be foils for the Amish, that required some virtuosic casting.

A couple months ago, plans were announced for a new reality TV show entitled "Amish in the City." The idea was to place Amish teens in a house in the big city and see what happened as they "discovered" the modern world.

THOUGHTS ON "AMISH IN THE CITY"... WORTHY OF A SECOND SEASON
Throughout the series, the Amish seem to have the impression that life here in the modern world is one big playtime and those that inhabit it exceedingly lazy.
Overall, “Amish In The City” is one of the few manifestations of reality television worthy of a second season since, despite its faults, is surprisingly mild in light of the maggot and entrails-eating antics of “Fear Factor” and the trivialization of marriage and romance inherent to shows such as “The Bachelor”.
Since none of them returned to the Amish at the end of the season finale, as part of the second season or as part of a stand alone reunion special, producers should track down these participants and update how these young people fair in the real world apart from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.
