19th and early 20th Century Amite County was also the subject of some of my graduate research.
My grandfather, John Clark Payne, was born in the Zion Hill area of Amite County on land that had been in his grandmother's family (the Moores) since 1805--four years before the county was organized in 1809.
Using traditional print resources available to me at the Clayton Genealogy Library in Houston and the records residing in the Amite County Courthouse in Liberty, I was able to construct a family tree and learn of my ancestors' contributions to the creation of Amite County and the settlement of southwestern Mississippi.

In the 1830 Madison County, Mississippi Federal census at page 99, Isaac Wells is listed and his family does not have a daughter living with him of the age as listed in the 1820 census.

She was born 1802 in Barnwall District, South Carolina and died October 21, 1843 in Amite County, Mississippi.
In 1833 when the canvass was made by the Amite and Florida Auxiliary Bible Society for the purpose of ascertaining all families "...of Amite County who are destitute each of a full copy of the holy scriptures..." in Captain Lea's beat, Thomas Tarver, Hezekiah Newman, Thomas Cockerham and Abram Rushing.
They were probably buried in unmarked graves in the old Cockerham Cemetery in Amite County.
