Moving iron ammeters use a piece or pieces of iron which move when acted upon by the electromagnetic force of a fixed coil of (usually heavy gauge) wire.
More modern ammeter designs are non-mechanical, or digital, and use an analog to digital converter to measure the voltage across the shunt resistor.

Per the (+) and (-) indicators on the back side of the new Hall ammeter, they are reversed - meaning that the (+) marked post corresponds to the (-) side of the front ammeter guage and vice-a-versa?
Also re the Hall ammeter, it seems that it would be easiest to connect the (+), (-) and ground connections on top of, and after the plastic trim/hold down unit is in place and fitted over the three brass stud posts.
To connect the terminals first and then try and slip on the hold down unit would not work near as well (if at all) with the original wire connector configurations.
