WALKER, PETER J., CATHY A. PARIS*, AND DAVID S. BARRINGTON.
To reconstruct the biogeographical history of the North American beachgrasses and to resolve the relationship of the Champlain beachgrass to the rest of the group, we undertook a study of DNA sequence variation in the ITS region of nuclear ribosomal DNA.
Topology of the ITS trees for Ammophila suggests that there was a single incursion of coastal beachgrasses into the continental interior.
Further, the association of Champlain and St. Lawrence ITS variants supports the hypothesis that interior populations were derived from populations in the northern Atlantic via the St. Lawrence Seaway.

 Opulus Press
The effect of sea-water submergence on rhizome bud viability of the introduced Ammophila arenaria and the native Leymus mollis in California
Ammophila arenaria, an invasive European beach grass, dominates most United States Pacific coast beaches north of San Francisco Bay, and it appears to severely reduce opportunities for regeneration of native plant species, including American beach grass, Leymus mollis.
The knowledge of how long Ammophila rhizomes can survive in sea-water is important for long-tern management strategies, which must consider the probability of reinvasion of areas where Ammophila has been eradicated.

 Peziza ammophila (MushroomExpert.Com)
Brown cup fungi like Peziza ammophila are notoriously difficult to identify with certainty--but this little guy grows on sand dunes and beaches, making it fairly easy to separate from other, superficially similar brown cups.
As Peziza ammophila matures, it emerges from the sand and splits, often peeling backwards and forming a star shape reminiscent of earthstars like Geastrum saccatum (but without the central puffball).
I have never collected Peziza ammophila, but I have examined a specimen sent to me by West-Coast correspondent Wendell Wood, who found the illustrated specimens in a sand dune near Tolowa Dunes State Park in California.

Botanical Electronic News - BEN #183
Ammophila arenaria was introduced to the west coast of North America in l868 to stabilize dunes in the San Francisco area.
A congener, Ammophila breviligulata Fern., native to the east coast and the Great Lakes Region, had been used on the Clatsop Plains and for stabilization plantings on a few areas of the Washington coast.
Ammophila is also seen by some to be a long-term threat to the scenic and recreational values of the extensive Oregon coastal dune fields.

Phylogenetic Analysis of the Abronia ammophila Green (Nyctaginaceae) Species Complex   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Abronia ammophila is thought endemic to Yellowstone National Park, and Abronia mellifera is thought to enjoy a more widespread distribution in Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington and Oregon.
This study was designed to collect molecular characters to build a phylogeny for the Abronia ammophila species complex with the hope that a molecular-based approach would succeed where a morphological approach has resulted in ambiguous and often subjective species determinations for individual plants.
The overall objective of this research is to resolve the taxonomy of the Abronia ammophila species complex.
