  Ammunition - LoveToKnow 1911
In an ammunition or shell store these precautions need not be taken except where the shell store and the adjacent cartridge store have a common entrance; persons entering may do so in their ordinary clothes.
Thus the ammunition columns of a division, forming part of the brigades of field artillery, carry reserve ammunition for the guns, the machine guns of the infantry and the rifles of all arms.
Some miles to the rear are the divisional and corps troops columns, which on the one hand replenish the empty wagons of the columns in front, and on the other draw fresh supplies from the depots on the line of communication.

 ammunition - Information at Halfvalue.com
Ammunition is a generic term meaning (the assembly of) a projectile and its propellant.
Ammunition, particularly that of small arms, is specified by an extremely wide range of designations derived from metric and English measurements, commercial firms' private systems, and the different requirements of armies of different countries.
Naval ammunition is therefore optimized for great velocity (to reach those great ranges, to hit aircraft flying at altitude and also with the benefit of reducing the lead that has to be applied to hit a distant moving target) and to disable said machines, rather than rending human flesh.

The figure for ammunition lost when a battery is destroyed (column 8) is 50% of the battery's starting total and the average for the side is used in the PDT to reflect this.
Not all of the battery's ammunition would be physically lost with the guns being overrun or destroyed by fire, but as far as the rest of the army would be concerned it is lost in every other respect at least temporarily.
The proportion of a battery's ammunition that was canister varied around and average of 22%, reaching 27-30% for Prussian, British and Russian 6pdrs, heavier pieces like 12pdrs often being as low as 10-15%.

 Guns
The real food for the guns is, of course, ammunition, an overwhelming supply of which, it came to be generally recognised, was to be the deciding factor in the European conflict.
Fabulous stories have been told of the consumption of ammunition, some of which may be true in the sense that on special occasions a large number of guns had to fire as rapidly as possible for a short period.
We see, then, that the question of ammunition supply must be approached not from the gunner's point of view, which regards only the capacity of the weapon to fire rapidly, but from the standpoint of the shell - maker, the railway manager, and the director of transport, who really must govern the consumption of shells.

The general organization of supply in the Finnish Army in the Winter War
The "munitions column" could transport the fire rations of an infantry battalion (infantry weapons), hand grenades worth of a regiments fire ration and the fire ration of an artillery battalion.
The ammunition situation of the Finnish army was indeed grim in almost all categories, with the exception of rifle ammunition.
To the relatively good ammunition situation, of the rifle caliber weapons, the number of hand grenades was very low (only 175 000), as was the number of 37 mm AT-gun shells (under 300 per gun), and the number of mortar shells (only 30 % of the required, ~280 per tube).

I still think that the Special Ammunition Column was an imrovised unit to handle ammunition supply to those guns which were not part of divisions, or it may have been similar to an Ammunition Park, conveying ammo in bulk from the base, along the L of C, to replenish the DACs.

Officers of artillery ought to be well acquainted with the Infantry Tactics as well as those of the Cavalry, in order that they may be capable of manoeuvring their batteries in the field so as to conform thereto without embarrassing the movements of the other arms.
For manoeuvring, the battery is formed either in line or in column of sections.  Column of pieces is never used, but in passing a defile, or on a march, or moving into or out of park.
