Topic: Amnionic sac

UNSW Embryology- Beginnings, Growth and Development - Placenta-fetal membranes
Note: amniotic sac (relatively tense), yolk sac (less tense), head fold region, region of heart tube ventral to the head fold, and the somites.
Gastrointestinal tract - approximate regions of the midgut ("roof" region of the yolk sac) and hindgut (Note: The foregut appears to be separated from the midgut by a dense column of tissue, but this is a section through one of the umbilical veins crossing to the heart obliquely from the side of the embryo).
The broad elevation in the ectoderm is the expansion dome (primitive single brain bulge) and the cluster of cells at the caudal end of the embryonic disc is the primitive node region.

Morphologically, placentas may be disc- shaped (discoid, as in higher primates and rodents); a band around the amnionic sac (zonary, as in most carnivores); a group of from several to over a hundred islands of tissue (cotyledonary or multiplex, as in most ruminants); or diffuse (diffuse or microcotyledonary, as in some nonruminant ungulates).
When these influences were eliminated by examining the effect of placenta and amnionic fluid on the pups' skin on the induction rate of maternal responsiveness in virgin rats (sensitization rate [57]), a significant facilitation of the onset of maternal behavior was observed [40].
However, several factors were varied over the series of studies, making it difficult to separate out effects of placenta and amnionic fluid, the duration of lactation prior to testing, and the mode of delivery of the foster pups and the mother's own litter.

When the sac is opened, fluid is commonly found surrounding a small macerated fetus, or alternatively there may be no visible fetus in the sac, the so-called blighted ovum.
Amnionic fluid may be absorbed when the fetus becomes compressed upon itself and desiccated to form a fetus compressus.

As far as the water Jesus mentions, this refers to the amnionic sac filled with a fluid that every child lives in prior to birth.
It was to this breaking of the amnionic sac that Jesus was referring to; not, as some would have us to believe, physical baptism.
Since the amnionic fluid is basically a colorless fluid that is pretty clear, it looks a lot like water, hence the people would talk about the water breaking or water appearing or whatever terminology they would use to indicate that the birth of the infant was imminent.

She’ll have to go somewhere else.” (Eda’s sentiments, exactly.) However, the patient’s sister explained that they had come from across the river and up the far side of the island by canoa, and had no other way to get anywhere.
She reported that the patient’s “bag of waters,” the amnionic sac in which the baby floats prior to birth, which usually breaks open at or near the time of delivery, had broken yesterday afternoon.
She was doing absolutely nothing, and by now over 24 hours had gone by since the rupture of the membranes (the amnionic sac), and each hour that passed increased the chances of infection for her and/or her infant.

It is not surprising, therefore, that the most common organisms cultured from amnionic fluid are commonly found in the vagina.

Monozygotic twins (one fertilized egg that splits in two) share the same placenta, chorionic sac, but don’t necessarily share the same amnionic sac.
This is probably where the idea of Ashley and Mary Kate being fraternal (dizygotic) twins came from.
Mary Kate and Ashley probably did not share an amnionic sac, therefore causing their doctor to come to an incorrect conclusion about whether or not they were fraternal or identical.
