 Who Is Amnon Lipkin-Shahak?
Lipkin-Shahak, age 57, is a highly decorated war hero who began his military service in the elite paratroop brigade and was appointed army chief of staff in 1995, succeeding Ehud Barak (currently leader of the Labor Party).
Shahak is seen as a moderate who can pull enough votes from the right of center and left of center to wean a coalition government away from having to cave in to the extreme right.
Shahak is also known to have been extremely close with Rabin and some suggest they had a virtual father and son relationship, journalists working for the Jerusalem Report magazine wrote in a biography of Rabin.

Even Israel's most recent prime ministerial hopeful -- former army chief of staff, Amnon Lipkin Shahak -- wanted to get in on the recriminations.

Here is the most likely scenario: Netanyahu, Begin, Shahak and Barak will all fall short of the 50% mark in the first round of voting for prime minister.
The danger is a Barak or Shahak victory over Netanyahu in the second-round runoff.
The hope is that a Netanyahu victory will be accomplished with the aid of a strong, ideologically committed party to his right that will have enough seats in the Knesset to prevent him from making further concessions to either Washington or Arafat.

CNN - Charismatic Israeli general joins race for prime minister - January 6, 1999
TEL AVIV, Israel (CNN) -- Calling Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "dangerous for Israel," a charismatic former army chief of staff, Amnon Lipkin-Shahak, announced Wednesday that he will run for prime minister in the May 17 national election.
In response, Netanyahu's office released a sharply worded statement: "The prime minister heard with pain and disappointment that Amnon Lipkin-Shahak opened his election campaign with a blatant personal attack, instead of presenting his political positions, if he has any."
Indeed, the perception that Lipkin-Shahak doesn't have firm plans to deal with the country's most pressing problems is seen as the cause of his recent drop in the polls.
