Amoeba - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Amoeba is a genus of protozoa that moves by means of temporary projections called pseudopods, and is well-known as a representative unicellular organism.
The word amoeba or ameba is variously used to refer to it and its close relatives, now grouped as the Amoebozoa, or to all protozoa that move using pseudopods, otherwise termed amoeboids.
Amoeba itself is found in freshwater, typically on decaying vegetation from streams, but is not especially common in nature.

 Amoeba
The word amoeba is a descriptive term for various single-celled organisms which move about by means of temporary projections, called pseudopods.
Amoeba may be as large as 700-800 μm in size, though some are much smaller.
Jennings made a full study of the movements of Amoeba, and of its general behaviour, and found therein many indications that these are on the whole such as we should expect of an organism working by "trial and error" rather than the uniform modes of non-living beings.

Brain Eating Amoebas  by Viera Scheibner Ph.D.
Amoebas were isolated from the air (Kingston and Warhurst, 1969) in the UK during an investigation into the possibility of isolating respiratory syncytial virus, and from the surfaces in cubicles in which infants with acute bronchiolitis were being nursed.
Amoebas, including those pathogenic to animals and humans, were found in swimming pools (Cerva et al., 1969) in Czechoslovakia where 16 young victims died of acute purulent meningoencephalitis, and thermal pools in northern New Zealand (Mandal et al., 1970: Cursons and Brown, 1972; and others).
It was concluded that the soil amoebas are stimulated to excyst to the infectious or trophozoite form by gram-negative bacilli which are present in the faecal stream, in decaying vegetation and in some small lakes during summer, as well as in drainage ditches, swamps and sewage outfalls.

Amoeba. Amoeboae form a group of the single-celled organisms called Protozoa.
In the middle of the cell, surrounded by the protoplasm, is the nucleus, a body which can be thought of as the blueprint for the organization of the cell's activity.
If an amoeba is cut in two the half with the nucleus may survive and reproduce; the other moves around for a while but cannot digest its food, and when its reserves are gone it dies.
The name amoeba is applied not only to members of the genus Amoeba but to a range of different types of Protozoa with pseudopodia living in the sea, in fresh water, in damp soil and in the bodies of larger animals.

 Amoebae
Traditionally, the amoebae have been classified as the protozoan taxon Sarcodina, with a taxonomic structure that separated species with supported pseudodpodia from those with unsupported pseudopodia, and those with skeletal elements, from those without.
The amoebae are probably the last large area of protists which have to be fully documented and explored, although progress in that area is now taking place (Amaral, Silberman).
Naked amoebae are major consumers of bacteria in soil ecosystems and are believed to occupy the same key role there as flagellates do in aquatic ecosystems (that of recycling bacterial productivity and ensuring nutrient regeneration and continued functioning of the ecosystem).

Because of this characteristic, amoebae lack a definate shape as this changes with the motion of the cellular contents.
When an amoeba moves, it extends a pseudopodium and anchors its tip, and then more cytoplasm streams into the pseudopodium.

Euglena - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Euglena is a common genus of flagellate protozoa, typical of the euglenids, and commonly found in nutrient-rich freshwater, with a few marine species.
The cells vary in length from around 20 to 300 μm, and are typically cylindrical, oval, or spindle-shaped with a single emergent flagellum.
(2003) revised the genus so that it forms a monophyletic group, moving several species with rigid pellicles to the genus Lepocinclis and including several species without chloroplasts, formerly classified as Astasia and Khawkinea.

Arcella is one of the most frequently encountered of the testate amoebae, especially in highly organically polluted waters, and in the sediments on the pond's bottom, where plant materials rot under conditions of low oxygen concentration.
When feeding, the amoeba extends a few lobopodia from the aperture in the test, but these are so difficult to see that close observation is needed to establish whether or not any given individual is alive.

Amoebidium is a genus of small protists that form walled, hairlike microthalli on the external surface of freshwater crustacea and insect larvae, including mosquitos.
The genus name, which means "little amoeba", refers to the amoeboid cells that the thalli may produce during asexual reproduction.
The related genus Paramoebidium, with seven described species, differs from Amoebidium primarily in habitat, which is in the hindgut of aquatic insect larvae and crustaceans.

Closely-related species could be collected within a larger grouping, a genus; related genera are grouped into a family, families into an order, orders into a class, classes into a phylum, and phyla into a Kingdom, the biggest and most general group.
In Linnaeus' time, there were just the Animal Kingdom and the Plant Kingdom, but later discoveries have convinced some biologists that some distinct types of organisms, such as Fungi and some tiny single-celled organisms, should be given their own separate Kingdoms.
Species names (and Genus names) are also treated as foreign words in English, meaning that they are italicized or underlined when printed or written.
