At the end of the year Amon left the Italian organization and announced that he was starting his own Formula 1 team and would build a car for the 1974 season.
Amon financed much of the project himself although additional backing came from John Dalton and Gordon Fowell was commissioned to design the Amon-Ford AF101.
Amon qualified 23rd ahead of a couple of cars but retired with brake problems at one-quarter distance.

In the 1961 Formula One season, with new rules for 1500cm³, the team kept Hill, von Trips and Ginther, and debuted another Chiti-designed car, the Ferrari 156 based on the Formula 2 car of 1960, which was dominant throughout the season.
The 1965 Formula One season was the last year of the 1.5-liter formula, so Ferrari opted to use the same V8 engine another year together with a new flat-12 which had debuted at the end of 1964; they won no races as Clark dominated in his now more reliable Lotus.
During 1969 Formula One season Enzo Ferrari set about wisely spending his newfound wealth to revive his struggling team; though Ferrari did compete in Formula One in 1969, it was something of a throwaway season while the team was restructured.

Chris Amon had a desire to be his own boss so in 1973 with his own money and that of enthusiast John Dalton he commissioned young designer Gordon Fowell to design a car for the start of the 1974 season.
So was born the Amon AF1 car powered by a cosworth DSV engine and the first F1 car to use a central fuel cell between the cockpit and the engine.
The Amon AF1's only race appearence would be at Spain where it ran a conventional nose cone but broke a brake shaft and failed to finish the race.

Some teams like Williams and McLaren in the 1980s and 1990s seem incapable of producing a bad car while operations like Arrows have rarely got beyond the middle of the grid with their efforts.
Teams such as BRM, Ligier, Tyrrell and Maserati are owed their place among the greats for always being there and often leading, while Eagle deserve a place for producing one of the most stunningly beautiful cars ever to take to the tracks.
Whatever their success, or lack of it, the fact that this type of team is no more is sad, although in light of the increased role of commerce within the sport, not surprising.

Amon though picked up his first Championship points with a fifth place at the Dutch GP and his practice times were invariably impressive.
In 1968 Amon was leading the Spanish GP only to retire with fuel pump problems and had a good second at the British GP, but there was little else until the Canadian GP when Amon was leading by over a minute when the transmission failed.

Well, it's worth being reminded that Chris Amon, from a little place called Scott's Ferry near a slightly larger place in the Manawatu called Bulls in little old New Zealand, was one of the youngest drivers ever to race in Formula 1.
The title neatly encapsulates the enormous respect with which Chris Amon was held by the world's top racing drivers and team owners of his day, even if he didn't manage to win a single F1 race.
It's as unfathomable today as it was when he was racing but Amon appears to have had an uncanny inability to be in the right place at the right time, at the time.

Considered to be the greatest Formula 1 driver to have never won a Grand Prix, he drove for Ferrari from 1967-69 and had several potential victories slip helplessly from his grasp.
The son of a New Zealand sheep farmer, Amon started racing at the age of 18 and a mere two years later (1963) he joined the Formula 1 World Championship circuit.
He then joined the new March Engineering team and had some more promising drives, but could not attain the top spot and he finished out his career with several lesser teams (including his own) before quietly bowing out of racing in 1976, and moving back to New Zealand.

Chris Amon was not only the unluckiest GP driver ever, but he also was the driver who drove the largest variety of makes, having raced or attempted to qualify a total of 13 marques: Lola, Lotus, Brabham, Cooper, Ferrari, March, Matra, Tecno, Tyrrel, Amon, BRM, Ensign and Williams.
The Rob Walker team was by far the most successful privateer team, having won seven races with Stirling Moss, one race with Maurice Trintignant and one race with Jo Siffert.
