Dol Guldur era originariamente chiamato Amon Lanc (Colle Calvo), ed era la capitale degli Elfi Silvani di Oropher, che partirono verso i Monti Neri (più tardi Monti del Bosco Atro).

At this time in their history, all of this people still lived close together, with some dwelling in the land that would later be called Lórien, and the others settling around the hill of Amon Lanc in the far south of Greenwood the Great.
Oropher was the ruler of the Elves who dwelt in the Greenwood, and he began to seek safety by moving his people northwards, away from Amon Lanc and away from the Silvan Elves who lived to the west of the Great River.

The hill upon (and in) which it lies was formerly called Amon Lanc (The Bald Hill - since it was a bare hill standing out of the treetops of Mirkwood - then called Greenwood the Great).
Amon Lanc was once a settlement of the Silvan Elves - who later retreated further north (and ultimately founded Thranduil's Halls in northern Mirkwood)

They left the ancient home at Amon Lanc across the river from their kin in Lorien, moving north three times.
At the end of the Second Age, they lived in the western glens of the Emyn Duir (Dark Mountains, only after Sauron's presence were they called Emyn-nu-Fuin, the Mountains of Mirkwood).
