  Amorphis - Death Metal
While arguably Amorphis peaks later in existence, these tracks remain favorites for their complete lack of artifice, leaving only a direct and visceral exercise in the emotions behind the formation of death metal.
At its core, this is death metal that became enmeshed in Bathory-style epic contemplation, and it maintains solidity through inventive mid-paced death metal riffing and conceptual uniting in songwriting structure.
The direction Amorphis are taking seems to concur with my prediction that metal would become more progressive, at least in ape: they've added a keyboardist who uses a Moog (immediately leading record companies to scream 70s prog influence, which has been around in death metal for years).

Amorphis --- Official Relapse Records Band Page
“AMORPHIS signifies a brilliant change for American metal -- a cohesive blend of distinctly separate pasts, forged in the present, and keenly aware that reinvention is the key to survival for a musical subculture many have written off as dead.
For over 10 years, Amorphis have set the benchmark for others to follow, and with the release of Am Universum the never-ending wave of innovation amazed metal fans and critics the world over.
Tuonela is Finnish for “Hell” or the “Underworld.” Yet, for all of Tuonela’s dark tones, AMORPHIS added new instruments to the dynamic, creating an otherworldly mix of adventurous and saturnine sounds unheard of in heavy music; flute, sitar and saxophone blended seamlessly with the guitarists exceptional fretboard work.

 Rough Edge: Amorphis CD Reviews
Amorphis add color and texture with the extend use of saxophone, flute, and trumpet in nearly every song on "Am Universum" - some purists may see this as a detriment, but those purists would be selling themselves short.

 Amorphis [www.progweed.net]
Amorphis is a Finnish group that began life playing primal death metal with superficial Finnish folk influences scattered throughout their early albums; a self titled 7" and two full lengths, The Karelian Isthmus and Privilege of Evil.
Amorphis took the quickly stagnating basic death metal structure and injected it with huge folky and progressive melodic ideas, including keyboards and a stand-in "clean" vocalist to contrast Tomi Koivusaari's earth shattering warbles.
Amorphis incorporates death metal, folk music, prog as well as some doomy and gothic overtones that are eventually discarded on all the later albums.
