Elon's dark view of the future raises the question of whether his devotion to historical research serves as a form of psychological retreat from the contemporary barrenness of Israeli public life, just as his relocation to Italy seems to be a geographical escape.
Elon is not one of those who believe the emergence of a racist dictator with a programme of mass murder was the climax of a long and irresistible tide of anti-semitism in German life, and that Jews who thought they could live safely in Germany were naive.
Elon's prevailing mood on the Israeli-Palestinian stalemate is bleak.

Elon began by telling interrogator Harry Reasoner that it was nonsense for Americans, particularly Jewish Americans, to take the position that they should keep their hands away from Israeli policy.
Israeli policy, said Elon, is very much a matter of concern to America, in part because we are the critical sponsors of the nation of Israel, in part because we have for that reason a critical responsibility to use our good offices and our muscle to encourage humane Israeli policies.
Amos Elon, seated behind his desk in Israel, told his vast audience that under existing policies, Israel faces one of two futures.

Elon's historical research and sensibilities are perhaps only surpassed by his ability to write a book both packed with data and eminently readable.
Elon tracks the upward social path of German Judaism through its early steps toward freedom in the Enlightenment in Germany, its mixed successes in the wake of German Romanticism, and its demise in the mixture of patriotism, capitalism, feudalism, militarism, and anti-Semitism that was Junker Germany in the twentieth century.
Importantly, Elon also demonstrates the direct connection that existed historically between the cycles of German economic and political prosperity and hardship and the outbursts of anti-Semitism in the German realm that were concomitant with these downturns.

Modern Jerusalem, in Elon's words, is "a breeding ground of ghettos." Israelis and Palestinians continue to work and live apart from one another; the city fissures into four rough quadrangles--Moslem, Jewish, Christian, Armenian--each with its own religion, its distinctive tongue or tongues.
In a rich, beautifully written, impartial meditation that is also a healing act, Elon, noted Israeli author and journalist (Herzl ; The Israelis: Founders and Sons), measures the clarity of Jerusalem's biblical landscape against a past and present choked with religious and political strife.
Throughout his well-paced, gentle narrative, Elon proceeds to explore his premise that Jerusalem is a necropolis wherein the dead hand of the past often has more weight than the living hand of the present.

'EXILE'S RETURN' - The New York Review of Books
Amos Elon ["Exile's Return," NYR, November 18, 1999] refers to my September 1999 article in Commentary, "'My Beautiful Old House' and Other Fabrications by Edward Said," calling it a "diatribe" no fewer than three times.
This is a matter of no little public consequence, for Said has masqueraded, and continues to masquerade, as what he is not: a dispossessed Palestinian refugee entitled to "reparations" from the state of Israel.
Although Elon hotly condemns my "outrageous extrapolation" from Said's "alleged fraud" to "the entire Palestinian case," the shoe happens to be squarely on the other foot.

Review of Jerusalem: City of Mirrors
Amos Elon sets out in his spare and sparkling new book to show that the unparalleled religious importance of Jerusalem also imbues the city with a unique political and social life.
Elon is particularly good at showing how, from the start, Jerusalem's special religious features made it an anomaly, a city located neither on sea nor river, not on a trade road, not on a natural fortress, and not near good pasturage or mineral resources. The one thing it has an abundance of is holy sites.
The less serious has to do with ignorance of Islam; Elon gamely tries to give this religion its due in the history of Jerusalem, but the gaps in his knowledge are apparent.
