Tori Amos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Amos led an influx of confessional female singer-songwriters in the early 1990s and is noteworthy as one of the few modern popular music stars to utilize a piano as her primary instrument.
According to Amos, they felt their power had been challenged and intentionally would do as little as they could do (legally speaking) to promote the works so that her career would be decimated by the time she had a chance to switch to a new label.
Amos has commented on a variety of roles from this era that she auditioned for but did not receive; notably she was offered the role played by Lea Thompson in the notorious flop Howard the Duck, but the offer was retracted when Thompson expressed interest.

 PAPERMAG >> AMOS POE
Poe's modesty aside, Just An American Boy is indeed a riveting and complex picture of a man and a nation at a crossroads.
Through Earle, Poe reveals the solitary voice of dissent in a society cast in the repressive shadows of imperialist rage and revenge.
Amos Poe not only understands this fundamental difference.

Movie Database - [TV Guide Online]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Poe touches on Earle's advocacy work on their behalf in both his art — songs like "Billy Austin" and "Over Yonder (Jonathan's Song)," movingly performed here over a slide show of condemned Texans — and his life: Earle is a tireless death-penalty abolitionist.
But Poe's cinematic conversation with Earle is superficial at best; he even gives short shrift to the recent controversy over Earle's 2002 "John Walker Blues," which attempts to understand what led "American Taliban" John Walker Lindh to take up arms in Afghanistan by assuming his voice.
Poe first surfaced in 1976 with the CBGB's rockumentary BLANK GENERATION, whose ratty style was in fortuitous harmony with the DIY aesthetic of the music it captured.

Film & TV: Frogs for Snakes (Austin Chronicle . 06-01-99)
With an all-star cast like this, you'd think Poe's film would be a knockout indie smash, a character-driven acting spree or maybe a quiet reflection on the fine art of the smirk.
On paper, Poe's humorous take on actors and gangsters and the merging of the two (he also penned the script) must have read like comic gangbusters, but the finished product 's more histrionics than hysterical.
Poe (Alphabet City Blank Generation) has indie cred to burn, and from the looks of Frogs for Snakes, he's been busy banking the pyre for some time, leaving the audience to poke amongst the embers for signs of a salvageable story.

 AMOSPOE
Poe is considered by many (see John Pierson's book, "Spike, Mike, Slackers and Dykes") to be the "father" of the modern independent American cinema.
Poe returned to indie filmmaking in 1990, with the acclaimed, TRIPLE BOGEY (on a par 5 hole) for Island/World.
In '98, Poe wrote and directed the neo-noir, FROGS FOR SNAKES (starring Barbara Hershey, Robbie Coltrane, Ian Hart, Harry Hamlin, Clarence Williams III and John Leguizamo) for the Shooting Gallery.

Her first debut album, 1991's Little Earthquakes, was a huge hit for the label, but few of her subsequent six releases lived up to that album's acclaim.
Amos' last album, Strange Little Girls, managed to garner a fair share of attention from the press.
The parties involved are calling Amos' departure from Atlantic a "mutual decision." She is said to be pursuing a new deal with Epic.

Amos Poe takes the framework of neo-noir and wraps around it a wacky satire of actors so desperate for parts they'll kill for 'em.
The reason this all works is because Poe makes it obvious that this is, after all, a movie--that is, another piece of show business that's being used to show how the business itself is so cut-throat it makes killers of those scrambling within it for placement.
Poe is also poking fun here at David Mamet; all his characters have the same monosyllabic names that Mamet favors in his play American Buffalo which is the actors' focal point.

FILMMAKER MAGAZINE | Fall 1997: PRODUCTION UPDATE
Amos Poe recreates the gangster genre with Frogs for Snakes, a screwball neo-noir set in a New York City demimonde where every career criminal is also an actor convinced all he or she needs to make it is one lucky break.
Barbara Hershey toplines a star-studded cast as Eva, a single mother who pays the rent by doing collections for her loan shark ex-husband Al (Robbie Coltrane); also on board are Ian Hart, John Leguizamo, Lisa Marie and Clarence Williams III.
His highly stylized 1984 Alphabet City inspired a rash of mainstream copycats, and Poe soon found himself in demand as a Hollywood pen-for-hire.

Steve Earle: Just an American Boy [DVD] - PopMatters Music Review
At one point during Amos Poe's documentary Steve Earle: Just an American Boy, Steve Earle is being driven through the nighttime streets of Nashville.
Earle talks about the state of America in early 2003, he voices his strong opinions on the death penalty (at one point, he talks about how the movie In Cold Blood gave him nightmares for days when he was a child), and hilariously describes the circumstances surrounding his 1994 arrest.
One thing Poe does get across is the fact that Earle is one passionate man. At one point, he's touring, defending his music to the right-wing media, rewriting his play about Karla Faye Tucker (the first Texas woman to be executed), and arguing on the phone with the play's director, seemingly at once.

The Foreigner, Poe's 1977 cult-classic, feels less like a movie and more like the shattered remnants of many other films assembled together in another form.
Director Amos Poe seems to be embracing the core of the underground movement that emerged in the 1970s, butthe various concepts clash.
The film appears immersed in the "new wave" movement, yet the only real sign of that seems to be cameos from a few musical personalities, like Debbie Harry of Blondie and Lux Interior of The Cramps.

CANOE -- JAM! Music - Artists - Amos, Tori
Singer-songwriters Tori Amos and Poe and the rock group Collective Soul have all left Atlantic Records.
Tori Amos says no costumes, or any other accoutrements for that matter, will be part of her sold-out show at Massey Hall one week from today.
It's a valid assumption that there would be, since Amos assumes 13 different characters to give the female perspective on songs written by men on her latest album, Strange Little Girls.

Movie Review: Just An American Boy / Mountain Xpress / Asheville, NC
Just an American Boy came about in part when Artemis Records' president Danny Goldberg asked writer/filmmaker Amos Poe if he'd like to do "a Don't Look Back on Steve Earle" (referring to D.A. Pennebaker's classic cinema verite documentary on Bob Dylan).
Poe immediately loved the idea of a fl-and-white documentary/concert film on the firebrand troubadour – only to discover that Goldberg wanted things in color (not to worry: Poe sneaked in some fl-and-white – and even green-and-white – sequences).
And that may be just as well, since even though Poe is good, he's not quite up to Pennebaker's speed – and the rougher, cruder, often garishly colored Just an American Boy is both truer to Poe, and somehow more fitting for its subject.
