	Amoskeag Falls History
		The importance of Amoskeag Falls and the Merrimack River in the history of Manchester.
		In 1729 a road approximately 10 miles long was built from Londonderry to Amoskeag Falls through the wilderness because of the importance of the Amoskeag Falls area.John McNeil is believed to be the first settler at the falls about 1733 in the area known as Happy Town located on the west side of the falls.
		Manufacturing came to Amoskeag Falls in 1809 with the construction of the first mill on the west side of the falls, which was known as the Harvey Mill.Waterpower was taken from the dam on Harvey Mill and flowed to the manufacturing mill through a channel blasted in the rock.

	Steam Locomotive Builders
		American Locomotive Company (ALCO) was formed in 1901 when seven smaller locomotive builders merged with the Schenectady Locomotive Works (Schenectady, NY) in order to compete against the largest locomotive builder of the day, the Baldwin Locomotive Works.
		The American Locomotive Company was known for its steam locomotives of which the 4-6-4 Hudsons and the 4-8-4 Niagras built for the New York Central and the 4-6-6-4 Challengers and the 4-8-8-4 Big Boys it built for the Union Pacific were its finiest examples.
		William Woodard of Lima Locomotive Works experimented in increasing the grate area to greatly increase the steaming ability of the locomotive.

		Thus the "Orange" was the first locomotive to sound a whistle in that part of the Genesee Valley, and she hauled the iron to complete the track from Warsaw to Attica.
		A historic Erie locomotive of the period previous to the opening to Dunkirk was the No. 90, named "The Dunkirk." It was one of the Hinkley, or Boston, locomotives.
		Sherman was the engineer of the locomotive that hauled the first section of the great excursion train from Hornellsville to Dunkirk on the opening of the railroad, May 15, 1851.

		The Amoskeag section of the city was served by the Independent Hose Company, known as Riverside Number 5 and housed on Front Street at the corner of Old Falls Road.
		In March of 1888, the city purchased from the Manchester Locomotive Works, the General Stark Number 5 steam engine at a cost of $3,657 and a hose carriage at a cost of $1000.

		Men worked on the construction of the canal when things were slow on their farms, but whenever they deemed it necessary to return to their own fields, they did so.
		Nine years were involved in the construction of the canal, so it is obvious that work was hampered by short summers, labor difficulties, poor equipment, use of gun powder (before the age of dynamite) for blasting, inexperience and constant need of repairs due’ to unwise economy in the original construction.
		The first locomotive, the "Stephenson," was built by Robert Stephenson Company in England and was shipped to Lowell over the Middlesex Canal in a knocked-down condition with no blueprints or instructions for assembling it at the Locks and Canals Company Shop (The Lowell Machine Shop) where two skilled mechanics assembled it.
