The German-built Amphicar was apparently inspired by the amphibious version of the World War II Volkswagen Kubelwagen, their "Jeep," known, appropriately enough, as the Schwimmwagen.
The Amphicar was introduced at the 1959 Geneva auto show, and was built from 1961 to '68, during which some 3,800 were produced.
Amphicars never really caught on, either as cars or boats, but they are a wonderful novelty.

Built for 7 years between 1961 and 1968, the Amphicar is unique for it's ability to traverse both land and sea, however the compromise to achieve both resulted in poor roadholding ability and very limited sea-going ability.
Able to achieve 7.5 knots from a single propeller it was indeed able to navigate small waterways, however rust and subsequent leaking somewhat dulled the experience.

It has 80% of it weight in the rear which makes it understeer, it has a short wheelbase and a stiff suspension which makes it ride rough, it has 43 HP so it is no powerhouse, so if you expect it to drive like modern cars it doesn't.
In the water it seeps a little (all Amphicar owner I talked to say theirs leak too) I wouldn't want to tie it up to a peer all night, but, it is fine for use.
The spare tire in the Amphicar is original and has never been on the ground and show no age cracks.

This should have been a tip off for me, but I was blinded by the warm and fuzzy "Amphicar Community" feeling that I was getting from chatting with everyone on line so I ignored my own gut feelings (never do that) and figured everyone in the Amphicar hobby has to be cool.
The weather was perfect for all but about 150 miles from MA to ME. When I looked over my trailer after unloading my Amphicar I noticed that all the paint was blown off the inner fenders, the front edges of the trailer and the leading edges of the fenders were already starting to rust.
Instead the Amphicar is going home where I plan to restore it and keep it in my family, as part of my extended automotive family.

The Amphicars were around for a number of summers and we always watched them with great delight, but then they vanished.
Parts support for the Amphicar is surprisingly good thanks to some suppliers that make reproduction parts and a place out in CA called Gordon's Imports that basically bought out all the NOS parts and still can get you just about anything you want today, so a project would not be that bad.
This gentleman had numerous Amphicars so it was obvious he knew what he was looking at and what a good donor car would be.

I think it all started back in the ‘50’s; my father was a Hudson dealer and mechanic in Hamilton Ontario, so I have always had a love of cars.
I can remember seeing a BLUE Amphicar floating down the Grand River where we used to go boating with the family.
He had 3 Amphicars and tons of parts.
