Amphipods are one of the great success stories in the Crustacea.
In the sea amphipods can be found burrowing in sandy and muddy sediments, living in tubes on hard surfaces, dwelling among macroalgae and sessile invertebrates, and as part of the plankton.
Amphipods are usually flattened from side to side but this is not always so.

Amphipods should be able to utilize dead clam material available periodically in natural systems however monocultures of clam populations held under laboratory conditions may present a unique opportunity for amphipods due to the elimination of predators, ability to utilize clam material as a food source and the lack of competition for dead clam material.
Amphipods living inside the shell cavity may also be able to consume clam excrements, however a population of amphipods may still take up a considerable amount of space inside the shell cavity which may inhibit the ability of the clam to successfully move water necessary for filter feeding and respiration.
Amphipods may be small enough to enter through one of the clam siphons however tentacles on the rim of the siphons may act as sensory organs that cause the clam to retract siphon and foot organs or "clam up" in response to touch.

 Amphipods by Ronald L. Shimek, Ph.D. - Reefkeeping.com
Amphipods are certainly "ecologically successful;" additionally, they are very successful evolutionarily, a fact reflected in their abundance in almost all marine environments.
Amphipods are arthropods, and as such they possess the arthropodan features of a segmented body with jointed, segmented, appendages and an external skeleton, or integument.
This means that amphipods lack free-living larvae and have to disperse by actual migration of the adults, primarily the females.

Amphipod crustaceans are one of the most diverse and abundant groups of invertebrates in marine benthic environments.
For reasons such as this, amphipods have a reputation for being hard to identify and consequently they are often identified only to order or family level in ecological studies.
Because amphipods are such an important part of benthic shallow-water communities (diverse and abundant) they need to be more readily identifiable for the scientific community.

The amphipod alimentary canal was examined by means of: 1) Light Microscopy to distinguish food content, and 2) Transmission Electron Microscopy to determine whether cell structure resembles that of previously studied parasitic and nonparasitic Copepoda.
The maxillipeds are nonconical in shape which further supports the idea of nonparasitism since most families of amphipods known to be parasitic have piercing mouthparts arranged in a large conical bundle (Thomas and Taylor, 1981).
Similar to amphipods living in sea anemones, the reduced antennules and antennae may be morphological adaptations for endosymbiosis by reducing entanglement in the mucus (Vader, 1983).

The amphipod burrowed in significantly lower numbers in patches with high polychaete abundance compared to those with lower abundance.
Also, plastic tubes mimicking polychaete body structure were not avoided by the amphipods, indicating that the physical tube structure of the polychaetes does not explain the amphipod's choice of burrowing site.
Furthermore, the amphipod did not increase or prolong swimming activities as a function of higher worm density, indicating that increased swimming activity over dense polychaete patches and subsequent migration away from them is not a likely explaination of why this amphipod burrow less frequently in patches of high polychaete abundance.

It is notably thanks to its size (20% of the total surface liquid freshwater of the world and a depth of more than 1600m), age (at least 20 million years) and isolation of the lake Baikal that its amphipod crustaceans have developed an unprecedented adaptive radiation.
Already 300 species have been described from the lake (totalling 20% of the world's freshwater species), 95% of them being endemic, and some Russian researchers speculate at least as many are still waiting to be discovered.
Its huge swarms constitute more than 90% of the amphipod biomass of the lake, and are the primary food resource of several fishes of economic importance.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Hay's Spring amphipod was confirmed to exist in four other springs within the borders of Rock Creek Park, which adjoins the National Zoo.
It appears that the Hay's Spring amphipod may spend its life in a shallow groundwater zone, moving in water that percolates among sand grains and gravel unless large volumes of water flush it up and out of an exit as a spring.
Similar in general appearance to the Hay's Spring amphipod but smaller (up to 0.23 inches or 6 mm), Kenk's amphipod is considered by The Nature Conservancy to be highly rare and critically imperiled in the District of Columbia.
