Bousfield (1978) and Bousfield and Shih (1994) that the Ingolfiellidea ought to be considered a sister-group to the remaining Amphipoda, the two ingolfiellid taxa present in the analysis were treated as outgroups.
Traditionally, the Amphipoda are divided into four suborders (Caprellidea, Gammaridea, Hyperiidea, and Ingolfiellidea), with the Gammaridea as the largest and morphologically most diverse.
