  Amphiuma
Amphiumas are a genus of salamanders, the only genus within the family Amphiumidae.
Amphiumas and sirens[?] share the same distribution, although they are not closely related.
The legs are existing, but very small: amphiumas are up to 1 m long, but their legs measure only 2 cm.

Amphiuma means, the two-toed amphiuma, is the largest of the three species, reaching a maximum size of 116 cm (45.6 inches) in total length.
Amphiuma tridactylum, the three-toed amphiuma, is the second largest of the three species reaching a maximum size of 106 cm (41.7 inches) in total length.
Amphiuma species are aquatic, although they periodically can be found on land at night during rainstorms or when the females are brooding eggs.  The normal habitat for all three species is either permanent or semi-permanent bodies of water such as canals, ponds, ditches, sloughs, rivers, or streams.

 Two-Toed Amphiuma
Amphiumas have two pairs of legs, and the three species, all of which occur in the southeastern United States, differ in regard to the number of toes at the ends of these limbs.
Amphiumas are less aquatic than their bodies might suggest, and it appears that they actually lay their eggs at the interface of water and land, rather than in a strictly aquatic habitat.
Amphiumas, especially this largest of the three species, are notorious for having a vicious (though not at all venomous) bite and should be handled with some respect.

Amphiuma is a pædomorphic salamander (a condition in which sexual maturity is reached before physical transformation is complete); adult skin is smooth and fully metamorphosed, however adults lack eyelids (as all larave do), and possess four branchial arches, with a gill slit between the third and fourth branchial arch, yet they lack external gills.
During the day, Amphiuma retreats in abandoned crawfish holes and mammal burrows or in jumbles of bottom debris with head protruding in expectation of prey (Bishop, 1943, p.50).
