In Junior Chemistry, amphoterism is considered chiefly in aqueous systems and generally using the Bronsted/Lowry definition of acids and bases.
Amphoterism means the ability of a substance to function as both an acid and a base.
The classification of a substance simply as "amphoteric" or not can be somewhat arbitrary, since this does not indicate "how acidic" a substance needs to be, nor whether the acid/base classification is the Ahrennius (acid produces protons, base produces hydroxide), Bronsted/Lowry (proton donor/proton acceptor) or the Lewis (lone pair donor/lone pair acceptor) definition.

 Amphoterism
Hopefully you noticed in previous examples that water was sometimes an acid and sometimes a base.
The ability of some chemicals to act either as an acid or a base is called amphoterism.
Whether an amphoteric chemical acts as an acid or a base depends on what other chemicals happen to be around.

Amphoterism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In chemistry, an amphoteric substance is one that can react as either an acid or base (more generally, the word describes something made of, or acting like, two components).
Many metals, such as zinc, tin, aluminium, and beryllium, have amphoteric oxides.
This effect can be used to separate different cations, such as zinc from manganese.

Examples of amphoteric substances include the hydroxides and oxides of Al, Cr, Zn, and Sn The dissolution of these species in acidic solutions should be anticipated based on the earlier discussions in this section.
Amphoterism is often interpreted in terms of the behavior of the water molecules that surround the metal ion and that are bonded to it by Lewis acid-base interactions.
The Fe impurity, however, is not amphoteric and remains as a solid.

Amphoterism, in chemistry, the property of certain compounds of acting either as acids or as bases (Acids and Bases), depending on the reaction in which they are involved.
Many hydroxide compounds and organic molecules that contain both acidic (e.g., carboxyl) and basic (e.g., amino) Functional Groups are usually amphoteric.

Some molecules or ions such as water are amphoteric [local] or amphiprotic.
Stated differently amphoterism is found for a small number of metal oxides or metal hydroxides as the transition of metals that form basic oxides to nometals the form acidic oxides.
Aluminum hydroxide is amphoteric, reacting both with NaOH and HCl.
