MMD Archives: Power of Duo-Art, Ampico and Solenoid Pianos
Because of the condition of Ampico's lighter weight leather and double flap system, the natural decay has subtracted roughly 10-15 percent from the overall capacity of that pump.
Also, in the Ampico, The setting of the amplifier is adjusted to a specific level for the piano it resides in, and often this was throttled by the factory on purpose.
Ampico wanted a more tame, softer playing instrument because I'm told that Charles Stoddard had a hearing problem that included ringing in the ears and was sensitive to pianos playing loudly, anyway.

Ampico had entered the reproducing piano race later than its great American rival, Duo-Art, and desperately needed a world famous artist in its catalogue if it was to be taken seriously.
While Fairchild was with Ampico he laid down that no important classical recording should even be advertised until the editing process, which involved both his and the artist's final approval of the finished roll, was completed.
This degree of care is apparent in virtually all Ampico recordings, and it must also have been a great comfort for artists to have a measure of control over the issue of their rolls.

 MMD Archives: Ampico Misconceptions
In contrast to the Duo-Art, the Ampico is a self-compensating mechanism.
It is certainly true that the crescendo in an Ampico B doesn't change the intensities directly, but requires intensities to be on so it is able to modulate them, whereas in the A, the Crescendo overcomes the intensities directly.
The fact that the Ampico roll coding system was never intended to utilize crescendos separately from the intensities is actually borne out by the fact that neither the model A or the model B used the so-called "independent" Crescendos.

Player Piano Rolls, Antique Player Pianos, Player Pianos, Player Piano Music Scrolls
Ampico reproducing systems were eventually installed in such fine pianos as the Mason and Hamlin, the Knabe, the Chickering, the Beale in Australia, and the Willis in Canada.
In addition to playing the artists' record music rolls the Ampico may be operated with any standard 88-note music roll to which the operator imparts his own interpretation and the instrument may be played manually the same as any upright or grand.
The Ampico may be had in the world-famous Chickering, Haines Bros., Marshall and Wendell, Franklin, Fischer and the celebrated Knabe pianos and for Canadian distribution also in the Willis pianos.

The Pianola Institute - History of the Pianola - Conlon Nancarrow
He had simply picked up two Ampicos because they were available when he needed them, and so his style of dynamics, which we shall consider next, had been designed around their capabilities and limitations, but his music was essentially for the player-piano in general, and not specifically for the instruments in his possession.
The Ampico system that Nancarrow used divides the bass and treble sections between E and F above middle C. Each half of the pneumatic mechanism is controlled separately by marginal perforations on its particular side of the music roll.
All these views of the player-piano are coloured by the particular instruments that the composers encountered, and so they cannot be taken as reliable pointers to the nature of the player-piano in general.

 MMD Archives: Re Ampico B
Premise: The Ampico B music reproducing *system* is inferior to the Ampico A system, because there are so few music rolls for the B. Evidence: The Ampico company reissued some classical music performances with new coding for the B system; they sound much better.
Therefore Ampico knew that the B was inferior.
Dr. Hickman, as a concerned engineer, was unable to convince Ampico management that the new "B model" should perform as well as the Ampico-A with the existing library, and so he was compelled to compromise the performance in favor of cost-reduction.

INKPOT#65 CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: Rachmaninov the Pianist - The Ampico piano rolls 1919-1929.
During the period 1919 to 1929, Rachmaninov made some recordings with Ampico on piano rolls, outside his commitments to record for RCA Victor.
Unlike the gramophone recordings, the sound quality of which were sometimes insufficient to do justice to the performer, piano rolls captured the performance exactly as it was played.
Hence, with the Ampico piano rolls and a modern reproducing piano, we are actually able to hear Rachmaninov play 'live', without the noise and flattened sound of historic recordings.

An ordinary "player-piano" is not designed to play Ampico or Duo-Art rolls though I've been told that taping a small strick of plastic over the top 4 and bottom 3 holes of a tracker does allow someone with a "player-piano" to enjoy Ampico and Duo-Art rolls.
Duo-Art and Ampico were electrically-driven systems usually fitted into pianos made by the most prestigious companies.
Ampico rolls may not be played on Duo-Art pianos, nor vice versa.

 AMPICO A & B Similarities/Differences
Remember the basics-- if it were necessary that the Ampico B be compatible with the model A, Ampico would have made sure that it was.
It is strictly the use of a crescendo which allows the Ampico a "Brilliant" setting, since the "Medium" setting cannot utilize crescendos or intensities to raise pump pressure over its nominal (idle) reroll pressure.
It isn't meaningful to depict either model of Ampico's expression characteristics with a set of curves taken when the pumps are fully amplified, since this is only a special case, occurring momentarily, and certainly not representative of the Ampico family of expression curves.

By means of these devices the Ampico can pick out the melody and also obtain special accenting effects simultaneously (in italics) with crescendo or diminuendo effects.
