The Mercator projection in cartography, for example, distorts Greenland because of its high latitude, in the sense that its shape is not that on a globe.
In start-stop teletypewriter signaling, distortion is the shifting of the significant instants of the signal pulses from their proper positions relative to the beginning of the start pulse.
The magnitude of the distortion is expressed in percent of an ideal unit pulse length.

distortion, in electronics, undesired change in an electric signal waveform as it passes from the input to the output of some system or device.
Amplitude distortion occurs when this factor is not the same for all input voltages.
Frequency distortion occurs when the amplitudes of the different frequency components of an input signal are changed by a factor that is not the same for all frequencies.

Amplitude distortion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Amplitude distortion is distortion occurring in a system, subsystem, or device when the output amplitude is not a linear function of the input amplitude under specified conditions.
Amplitude distortion is measured with the system operating under steady-state conditions with a sinusoidal input signal.
When other frequencies are present, the term "amplitude" refers to that of the fundamental only.

This channel distortion may be caused by multipath due to reflections of the signaling within the communications medium 102, as well as the effect of non-linearities and noise contributions of devices such as amplifiers, filters, etc., coupled with ingress noise sources introduced into the medium over a given bandwidth in the communications path.
As such, the phase distortion estimator 224 and the amplitude distortion estimator 222 may be a part of the receiver 206, at the same location as the receiver 206 or otherwise coupled to the receiver 206, either directly or through another communications medium.
The phase distortion estimator 224 and the amplitude distortion estimator 222 may be implemented according to such a program of instructions, and the machine may include the transmitter 202 and the receiver 206.

Harmonic distortion (the most commonly and easily measured anomaly in audio components) is generally caused by non-linearities in the electrical characteristics of the amplification devices.
Such distortion is "harmonic", as the number of zero crossings in the error wave form in an integral multiple of the number of zero crossings in the fundamental.
A small amount of this type of distortion is inaudible as it does not drastically alter the shape of the waveform and does not affect the zero crossing point.

Amplitude tracking: The relative difference in the amplitude response between a reference filter and a filter under test.
Distortion: Undesired changes in the purity of a signal, so that a spurious element or elements are added.
These changes can be exhibited as amplitude distortion where the output does not bear the same proportion to the input at all frequencies or phase distortion or non linear phase shift.

Linear Distortion, which is a form of error that creates no new frequencies beyond those that are present in the input signal.
Nonlinear distortion is quantified by measuring the magnitude of each of the new frequencies that are created by the action of the nonlinear distortion mechanisms in the Unit Under Test (UUT).
Its amplitude is the vector sum of the tones from the signal and various sources of distortion, which appear at that frequency.

 Non-linear signal processor - Patent 4315319
Compensatory amplitude adjustment is made to a sampled signal in accordance with the statistical deviation of the signal from a preselected statistical model.
In the case of a frequency distorting signalling medium of known, fixed properties, the technique of the inverse filter has been used, whereby a network having a transfer function which is the inverse of the transfer function for the signalling medium (i.e., telephone line or whatever), is employed.
Such digital techniques have been applied to overcoming linear distortions in a transmission line and for compensation of deviations from a linear response (described by a classical linear differential equation or difference equation whose coefficients are not functions of the amplitude of the input signal).

The distortion certainly looks different, but the total load impedance is now lower, and also the harmonics are shifted in phase by the capacitance, and so little can be deduced from this.
The distortion is estimated at 0.015%, showing that distortion is a little increased with this lower and reactive load, as expected.
The distortion remains sharp and clear, simply varying in amplitude as the signal amplitude varies, whatever the rate of change.

It is our opinion that phase distortion is much more annoying than amplitude distortion because it affects the signal at a node.
While amplitude distortion causes only an attenuation (or amplification) of the signal, phase distortion gives rise to enormous relative errors when the signal should be at or near zero.
The signals are qualitatively different, and yet the manufacturer of such a circuit could advertise "0.000% Total Harmonic Distortion" and "perfect frequency response" for this device.

Amplitude distortion occurs when the signal fed to the stage has an amplitude which drives the amplifier into a saturated state so as to clip the applied signal.
Transient intermodulation distortion is generally caused by the inability of a negative feedback amplifier when presented with a fast changing input signal to feedback a needed feedback component in time to interact with the fast input signal.
Distortion in preamplifiers has heretofore generally been measured by feeding a reference sine wave of a relatively modest audio frequency of between 1 KHz and 10 KHz into the preamplifier and measuring any distortion caused thereby.

Among the possible causes of distortion are: amplifier non-linearity, oscillations due to the coupling of the RF transistor with input/output matching networks, and oscillations in the power supply lines.
Since this distortion often cannot be efficiently analyzed by simulation, you must identify and eliminate it during the experimental phase of the design.

 Doppler Distortion in loudspeakers
Indeed, the existence of (velocity based) Doppler distortion in loudspeakers was originally established many years ago [Ref 1] and is maintained to this day.
Based on this, the effect probably should not be called 'distortion' (although it must be said that anything that adds frequencies that did not exist in the original recording actually is distortion, but that is probably a philosophical debate rather than one to be considered by the engineering fraternity).
Amplitude modulation is easily seen, and was also quite audible during the test - even with earmuffs.

The systematically distorted amplitudes were used to modulate a wideband noise which was then spectrally limited by the original analysis filter.
