  Amport House - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Amport House, currently the British Armed Forces Chaplaincy Centre (AFCC), is a manor house at Grid reference SU296440 near Andover, Hampshire.
The current house was built near the village of Amport in 1857 by the Marquis of Winchester and replaced two earlier houses built on the site.
During World War II the house was taken over and used as the headquarters of Royal Air Force Maintenance Command.

Amport is a straggling village centred around its village green, adjacent to its school and to the Pillhill Brook, all of which are much valued assets to the village and its inhabitants.
Other special considerations for the villages are the Hawk Conservancy, Amport House, the disused watercress beds, which are about to be converted into a trout fishing lake and stock ponds, the village school, the village church and the village inn, with its own green facing up the valley of the brook towards Monxton.
Amport Village school has a catchment area far beyond the village of Amport and is much acclaimed for its educational excellence and its strong musical tradition.

As part of the armed forces rationalisation the building services were replaced/upgraded including the provision of en-suite bathrooms in each bedroom together with the installation of a lift and new fire escapes.
The extension to the existing building was two storey housing bedrooms, offices and a chapel.
This element of the project was particularly sensitive as it formed the background to the knot garden.

There is parking at The Amport Inn provided you are using the pub, although there is a parking area about 3 mile further along the road at one end of the large village green by the red telephone box.
Continue past buildings associated with Amport House, the local church plus the walls of several very large properties and try to sort out which wall goes with which large garden.
The main entrance to Amport House is easy to identify, however, with its 15 ft high gates and gate lodge.

Amport, a parish in Hants, 1 1/2 mile from Weyhill and 4 1/2 miles from Andover stations on the L. and S.W.R. It includes the tithings of Sarson and East Cholderton.
The manor belongs to the Marquis of Winchester, and has descended to him from the Norman house of De Port, the common ancestors of the Paulets and the St Johns.
Amport House, the seat of the Marquis, built in 1857, in the Tudor style, after designs by Mr Burns, stands in a pleasant undulating park much marked with single trees.

Park House was an extra parochial Inn near the borders of Wiltshire at the crossroads of the Marlborough to Salisbury and Amesbury to Andover roads 9 miles West of Andover.
Amport House was built about this time, replacing the ancient mansion and on a better site.

Amport's name derives from a grant of land by William the Conqueror to Hugh de Port, the "Am" part coming from the Celtic word of a stream or brook.
Amport House (pictured here), was built in 1857 by the 14th Marquis of Winchester, used during the war as the headquarters of the Royal Air Force Maintenance Command and eventually becaome home to the Armed Forces Chaplaincy Centre.
East Cholderton, Amport and Monxton are linked by the Pill Hill Brook, a tributary of the Anton and then the Test, noted for its dry fly fishing.

Amport House, the Armed Forces Chaplain Centre, was inaugurated on the 1 April 1996 to provide religious and welfare support and training for uniformed personnel of all three services.
Originally the RAF Chaplain's School, the School moved to Amport House in 1962, having first been based at Dowdswell Court in Cheltenham.
In addition it houses the Joint Arms Control and Inspection Group (JACIG), HQ Provost & Security Services (RAF), including the newly-formed Tactical Provost Wing, the RAF Centre for Aviation Medicine (CAM) and No 616 Volunteer Gliding School which operates Vigilant T1 motor gliders.

The speaker on Friday evening is Lindsay Nicholson Editor of Good House Keeping Magazine and author of ‘Living on the Seabed’ her personal account of her experience of grief after losing both her husband and daughter to leukaemia.
We met for our second weekend meeting at Amport House on 20-22nd May. There was a mixture of those who attended last year and those who have been widowed very recently.
The weekend provides a chance to be waited on and to meet other ladies, who have been through similar circumstances so we are able to speak freely, learn from each other and from the padres and Army representatives that were on hand.

Personal awareness courses for cadets are run at the RAF Chaplains' School, Amport House, Andover, Hampshire.
There are no medical staff at Amport House and cadets who require daily medical treatment are not to attend or be nominated to attend.
Also, Corps adults attend for supervisory duties and to assist the Amport House staff in all aspects of the course including full participation in discussion and studies.

 Miscellaneous
This extraordinary item, which takes the form of a mythical sea-creature surrounded by very detailed crustacea, was among the collection of items commissioned by Mrs Fish for the Admiralty in order to commemorate the death of Nelson.
The "Fish" collection included many extraordinary pieces of furniture, all distinguished by their inclusion into the design of mythical sea creatures and was in use in Admiralty House, Whitehall for many years.
This painting was part of a large restoration project undertaken on eight extraordinary bird paintings that hang in Amport House.

The fourteenth century church, built between 1320-30 is surrounded by green lawns and lies close to Amport House former home of the Marquess of Winchester and the Paulet family.

It was agreed that 3 prizes be funded, Maurice Hardy proposed a Sunday lunch for 2 at the Amport Inn.
Their Trust Deeds state that "the hall is for the use of Monxton residents and the surrounding areas" Sarah Hammer pointed out that 37% of Amport's residents (those living north of the A303) were not interested or in favour of a change.
Despite the general feeling of the members, the Chairman requested the decision be delayed until we had a full council to give all members an opportunity to discuss the proposal.

There has been a military presence at Amport House since 1962 when the original service (the RAF's Chaplin's school moved there from Dowdswell Court in Cheltenham).

Badger House in Shropshire became the single purpose of the Trust from 1994.

The present Amport House was built in 1857 and replaced two earlier houses built on the same site.
After use by the Royal Air Force during World War II, it was purchased in 1957 by the Ministry of Defence and is now the home of the Armed Services Chaplaincy Centre.
More recently, the Wiltshire Cholderton became known as West Cholderton, but this distinction was soon dropped so we are left with the present, typically English, muddle of lost lorries and late lunch guests.
