The Ampulicidae are now considered to be a subfamily of Sphecine wasps, which means that their subfamily status changes the name to Ampulicinae.
Ampulicidae prey on cockroaches, and Williams (1929) provided a very detailed account of their behavior.
After the wasp has stung and paralyzed a roach, it drags the prey to a bark flap or other suitable niche and deposits an egg on the venter of the roach.

 Catalog of Sphecidae
In the XIXth century, these wasps (except Heterogynaidae, added in 1969) were often combined with other primarily ground-nesting Hymenoptera into a single group, Fossores, now known to be artificial.
Alexander's results were somewhat inconclusive, but Prentice and Melo independently subdivided the extant Apoidea into five monophyletic families: Heterogynaidae, Ampulicidae, Sphecidae, Apidae, and Crabronidae.
The catalog's main objective is to allow quick orientation in the vast body of the available literature on the four included families.
