CPC Zone : The Amstrad CPC Community - About Us
Over the years Amstrad have produced serveral electronic appliances including audio/video and was a major part of the launch of Sky as at that time it was the only company producing (and still producing) the digital boxes and dishes for recieving the service.
The CPC 464 was followed by the 664 which disposed of the built-in cassette recorder for storage and moved to the much more reliable floppy disk drive, later the 6128, 6128 plus and 464 plus which had all been updated both cosmeticaly and technicaly.
The software which came bundled with the various ranges of the Amstrad CPC was written by the in-house development team Amsoft who also manufactured various consumables (floppy disks etc).

BBC - h2g2 - Amstrad CPC Home Computers
The Amstrad CPC computers, especially the first model CPC 464, were one of the most successful computers in Europe in the mid-1980s, with more than two million units sold.
All the CPCs had a fairly good keyboard and rather mediocre monitors, which were either monochrome green or in colour; the CPC itself could display at a maximum of 27 different colours.
To pardon Amstrad, it should be said that at that time, both formats were new and theoretically the 3-inch could have become the world's standard format (were it not for the Apple MacIntosh and the MSX home computers already using 3.5-inch).

Compared to a C64 or a ZX Spectrum, the Amstrad CPCs shipped with their own monitor, had a built in tape recorder or floppy disk drive and even a small loudspeaker.

The CPC was envisaged as being a hybrid games/business machine, but eventually ended up as a games machine in competition with the SinclairSpectrum and the CommodoreSixtyFour.
It was slightly more robust due to the fewer number of system components and also ran the then-common CPM operating system, but used 3-inch disk drives making data-interchange rather difficult and the disks themselves were always in short supply and expensive.

The Amstrad CPC 6128 was the successor to the Amstrad CPC 664 which had a very short life.
Norbert Unterberg reports that the main reason for this was that the original Amstrad did not pass the German "FCC" test because it was polluting its surroundings with electromagnetic waves, and the rules for that were much stricter in Germany.
However, after "Schneider Rundfunkwerke" stopped selling the Amstrad CPC series of home computers and the PCW series of word-processors, Amstrad continued to sell the CPC under the Amstrad brand name in Germany.
