Unlike the previous PCW models which came with only the Locoscript word-processor, the PCW16 came with a complete range of built-in software - word-processor, spreadsheet, address book, diary/alarm, calculator and file manager.
Luckily, Amstrad abandoned the Hitachi 3" floppy format and switched to the standard MSDOS 3.5" 1.44 MB double-density floppy disk.
Amstrad provided Several internal expansions for the PCW-16, 1 MB RAM, 2 MB Flash RAM, Application ROMs, second FDD drive; but it seems that none of them saw the light.

Amstrad emulators reviewed for Linux Format
An Amstrad PCW is seldom confused with the later, but it looks and works enough like a 'real computer' to satisfy many people, at least till the advent of the web.
PCWs were bundled with a 100 character, 36 line mono screen and printers ranging from a dotty matrix printer, through a slow and noisy daisywheel, and later an inkjet capable of results belying their source.
Amstrad is a shadow of its former self, but emulators are thriving - thanks to the efforts of former employee Cliff Lawson, who obtained permission for emulator authors to freely use ROMs developed at Amstrad's expense, including those for the CPC and ZX Spectrum, which Amstrad bought from Sinclair in 1986.

 SiliconCave • AMSTRAD
The Amstrad CPC/PCW range of computers came either with a built-in disk drive or with a floppy connector (the controller was built in all the models) and CP/M 2.2 and 3.0 was available, even bundled with some models and often used.
Amstrad had aparently bought huge quantity of these and kept putting them in all their 8-bits till the early 90's.
The PCW range however started another revolution, if only in the U.K. and partly in Germany - the fully equipped "word processor" computer could be found in many small entreprenuers' offices and workshops, hidden under piles of paper or wood shards and splinters, running the paper side of their businesses.

 PCW Word Processor
I guess the most often asked question about PCWs is how to get data from a PCW in Locoscript format to a PC to be edited in a Windows based word processor.
When a PCW is switched on it will just show a blank screen (either green or white) but won't do much else until a boot disc is inserted.
Many people ask about using the printer from an old PCW on some other computer or what is the pinout of the cable (presumably with a view to using it on another computer or replacing the PCW printer).

Amstrad PCW - Spares, Repairs & Disc Conversions to PC
Though superseded by PC's for most applications these days, the good old PCW is still favoured by many people, especially authors and those who find difficulty handling a mouse, for its easy to use LocoScript word processor (or LocaScript to those in the USA) and its friendly keyboard layout.
While so many PCW orientated businesses have ceased to trade or moved to newer pastures, our PCW business has actually grown year on year as it becomes more and more difficult for dedicated users to source consumables, spares, software and support for the venerable PCW.
For active PCW users, there's a Help and Tips page which gives answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" and problems we find that folks have been having with both LocoScript and CP/M. We are pleased to be able to offer you the following for your Amstrad PCW:
