Char’s Counterattack is a worthy ending to the rivalry between Amuro Ray and Char Aznable.
Amuro and Char are the two best rivals I have ever seen anywhere (life, sports, movies, anime....) The story can't be judged entirely through this film because the story starts in Gundam 0079 (1st one).
Amuro is a great hero because he has his flaws.

For those unfamiliar to the canon narrative of the Universal Century time line, the RX-93 Nu Gundam is Amuro Ray's final mechanical ride of choice in the frankly fucking epic film Char's Counterattack.
In the novel Beltorchika's Children, essentially a re-telling of the events in Char's Counterattack, Amuro is actually fitted with the finished iteration of the Nu Gundam, that of the Hi-Nu Gundam.
Considering that Gundam, Amuro Ray and Super Robot Wars are a big fucking deal to a lot of Japanese anime afficionados and gamers, this kit merges all three of those into a terrifyingly immense whole (kinda like a gattai sequence that results in Bandai making lots of money).

Amuro Ray, pilot of the original Gundam, is the only one who can stop Char.
Even one of Amuro's visions describes him as "pure of heart" (to Amuro's own great surprise).  As Amuro and Char join combat, Char calls Amuro a worthy opponent and throughout the battle, tries to talk him around to joining Char's cause.
This mutual respect between hero and anti-hero adds an element of ambiguity to their antagonism, making it less of a simplistic, fl and white conflict than might be expected from this type of movie.

Good war drama is the biggest ingredient; Amuro and his comrades desert from the stress of war many times, but always realize what's right and come back.
Amuro Ray is a very annoying whiny kid, but the show does a good job of showing that he's a whiny kid in a war that he never asked for, so you can understand why he might be this way.
