Amused to Death - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Amused to Death is a solo album by former Pink Floyd member Roger Waters, released in 1992 (see 1992 in music).
Featuring Jeff Beck on guitar, Amused to Death further explores Waters' disillusionment with modern Western society, focusing specifically on the influence of television and the mass media.
Amused to Death reached #21 on The Billboard 200, aided by "What God Wants, Part I", which hit #4 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks in 1992.

With Amused To Death, surely one of the most provocative and musically dazzling records of the decade, Roger Waters has fulfilled his part of the bargain.
However, it must be stated that, from the near-tactile quality of its musical fiber to the epic scope of its theme, Amused To Death is a masterful rock parable that ranks with or surpasses the Floyd's finest work.
Aspects of Amused To Death were molded by the onrush of events that paralleled its assembly.

Floydian Slip(tm) : The Pink Floyd Experience > Albums > Roger Waters > Amused to Death
There was speculation that Roger Waters would created a sequel to his 1987 album "Radio K.A.O.S." During breaks in his "K.A.O.S." tour, he recorded some material at Nassau's Compass Point Studios and The Billiard Room, the recording studio in his Barnes, West London, house.
With a tentative release date of 1989, the album was to be named "Amused to Death," and even had an album cover design already in the works.
While the title, taken from Neil Postman's book, Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business, was the same, Waters abandoned his original plans to continue the tale started in "Radio K.A.O.S."

Amused to Death is in a completly different league to its two predecessors.
Bookended by the poignant tale The Ballad of Bill Hubbard it is a remarkable work that saw RW in the album top ten for the first time (and he still has not realeased a follow up, despite this album being thirteen years old).
The final song in which Roger states that this race has "amused itself to death" likens mankind, somehwat aptly to a race of monkeys who are too busy "piling the dishes and answering the phone" to care about anything important.

Ground and Sky review - Roger Waters - Amused to Death
I find Amused to Death to be the album that The Final Cut should have been - it's in the same vocal-heavy, sparse-instrumental style, only done a whole lot better.
Actually, the closing quartet of "Watching TV" through "Amused to Death" are probably the strongest music Waters ever did on any solo effort, getting a bit denser instrumentally and a bit more focused lyrically, and a lot more tasty melodically.
I usually find it difficult to sit through the entire album, it being so long and so windy, but for me those last four tracks are worth the price of admission; the closing title track never fails to give me chills.

Roger Waters, former bassist/singer/songwriter for the British supergroup Pink Floyd, answers this question in his album Amused To Death.
The album begins and ends with an old man telling the story of the death of Private William Hubbard of the Royal Fusiliers.
"I had at one point this rather depressing image of some alien creature seeing the death of this planet and coming down in their spaceships and sniffing around and finding all our skeletons sitting around our TV sets," Waters told the L.A. Times.
