 amusement rides
An "amusement ride" is defined by the guidelines as a system that moves people through a fixed course within a defined area for the purpose of amusement.
There are amusement attractions that are not specifically addressed by the guidelines, for example, “virtual reality” rides when a device does not move on a fixed course through an area.
For each accessible amusement ride, an accessible route is required to connect to a wheelchair space, a ride seat designed for transfer, or a transfer device for use with an amusement ride.

Amusement Parks of the Past and Present - An Official TransCyberian Express Station Stop - Parks
Amusement parks have existed for hundreds of years as fairs, festivals, carnivals, circuses, expositions, and pleasure gardens.  They have often existed in city and town squares and in public and private gardens.
Eventually, amusement resorts sprang up in suburban and rural areas from coast to coast and became premiere vacation destinations that vitalized local economies.  Parks competed with each other by providing the latest technological innovations, and continue to do so today.  By 1900, amusement parks were a staple of American society.
Amusement park competitiveness is based on the type of park, its size and attractions, and upon its having the biggest, tallest, fastest, and wildest rides.

Spatial and temporal enclaves remote from everyday life, amusement parks are among the favorite recreational places of Americans, who imported the concept from Europe, developed it into a major artifact of American popular culture and have successfully re-exported it throughout the world since the 1980s.
Amusement parks not only provide an abundance of entertainment to visitors by featuring roller coasters, Ferris wheels, carousels, games, food, and shows, but also have promoted very contested models of ideal future societies and utopian communities, especially since the creation of Disneyland in 1955.
Contemporary amusement parks are the descendants of medieval trade fairs and European pleasure gardens of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Safety & Oversight of Amusement Rides In California
Whenever a serious accident occurs at an amusement park, it is natural to ask "Who's in charge?" and "How safe are the rides?" This report investigates three issues: 1) the accident data for amusement rides, 2) the regulation of amusement ride safety in California, and 3) how other states regulate ride safety.
Given the large number of amusement parks, many people are surprised to discover that California is one of only 10 states that does not have specific state oversight over permanent amusement parks or rides.
Although the exact number of amusement rides in each state is not available, because of the greater number of parks and larger populations in these states, we would expect more accidents to occur.

Safety & Oversight of Amusement Rides In California
For the last 30 years, the history of amusement park safety laws is a history of legislative reaction to high profile accidents.
Most amusement ride statutes and regulations, especially prior to the early 1980s, focused on setting standards for and regulating owners and manufacturers.
Some states also have amusement ride operators' and attendants' manuals that provide guidelines for general safety (do's and don'ts), proper conduct for operators, handling emergencies, etc. Many parks have their own such manuals.
