Adding to the strength of its continuing series, the WB rolled out Gilmore Girls, the critically acclaimed, multigenerational and multiethnic drama about a single mother and her teenage daughter (played by Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel) created by Amy Sherman-Palladino.
The network was able to turn its slide around the following year, and for the first time in 2001, the network reached the coveted 5th place in ratings among overall TV households and in the 18-49 demographic.
Gilmore Girls was the first program developed by the Family Friendly Forum, an initiative launched by Procter and Gamble, Johnson and Johnson, IBM, and other major advertisers in cooperation with the WB, in an effort to develop programming that families could watch together.

My first serial love was soap opera; my sister and I watched all the ABC soaps in the '70s, especially "General Hospital." I was soon a subscriber to "Soap Opera Digest" and later "Soap Opera Weekly" because the behind-the-scenes drama was as intriguing to me as anything that happened on-screen.

Graham, who's 5-9, passed virtually unnoticed through nine television series until two years ago when producer Amy Sherman-Palladino cast her as Lorelai Gilmore.
Lauren Graham, who once lived for two years on the money she made from a TV commercial for Cascade, finally landed a good role in a very good series that everybody loves because it's a whole bunch of "s" things in one - smart, sexy, sophisticated, silly, sharply written and a little sappy.
Her show, in which she stars as a 32-year-old working mom bringing up a 16-year-old daughter in quaint Stars Hollow, Conn., sends TV critics into a deep rapture.

 WB recalls Sandler's 'Mayor'
The WB's reversal on "The Mayor" follows the decision to table the midseason order for the planned spinoff of its hit dramedy "Gilmore Girls." That untitled project was scuttled by budgetary issues when the high cost of shooting the show on location in Venice, Calif. -- as intended by creator Amy Sherman-Palladino -- became prohibitive.
Sources said the decision to scrap the project, tentatively dubbed "The Mayor," was made by mutual agreement of the principals at Happy Madison, SPT and the network.
Preproduction had begun on the show, which was given a midseason order when the WB announced its fall lineup in May, but sources said the network, studio and Happy Madison were unhappy with the creative direction of the series.
