  Aerospaceweb.org | Aircraft Museum - An-225 Mriya 'Cossack'
Currently the world's largest airplane, the An-225 Mriya (dream) is an enlarged version of the An-124.
The original purpose of the An-225 was to ferry large components used in the Soviet space program.
Proposal for an enlarged variant of the An-225 with an additional engine mounted on each inboard pylon and able to carry an increased payload, proposed primarily as a possible launch platform for Russian or foreign space vehicles; not built

Antonov An-225 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The An-225 is an extension of Antonov's earlier An-124.
The An-124’s rear cargo door and ramp were removed to save weight, and the empennage was changed from a single vertical stabilizer to a twin tail with an oversized horizontal stabilizer.
The twin tail was made necessary by the requirement to carry external loads, which would disturb the aerodynamics of a conventional tail.

An Antonov update program involves the addition of modern navigation and communication avionics, a collision avoidance system, and modifications to reduce the noise signature of the aircraft.
But, with the breakup of the USSR, the crumbling of the Russian space program meant that it is an aircraft without a job.
On it record-breaking flights, the An-225 took off at an all-up weight of 1,118040 pounds, with a 156 ton payload.

 The Antonov Giants: An-22, An-124, & An-225
The narrow-chord wing of the An-22 meant that the total wing area was low and so the wing loading was unusually high for a cargolifter, but the wing had double slotted flaps over 60% of its length, and the An-22 could take off in 1,400 meters (4,265 feet) in fully-loaded condition.
An array of three radars were fitted with radomes under the nose for navigation and weather warning, and like most Soviet transports, there was glazing under the nose for the navigator.
Their An-124-100s not only give the company an unmatched commercial heavy lift capability, these machines are optimized for operating under austere conditions and can fly almost anywhere if there's a landing strip long enough for them.

I saw this monster aircraft sitting alongside the runway and thought: "What the HELL is that monster?" As it turned out, apparently the Russians had a regular arrangement with some Texas oil companies and used the An-124 to transfer oil drilling gear to the various former-Soviet Central Asian republics.
A few years later I got an email from a US Army sort who told me a story about how an An-124 flew into Wichita, Kansas, with some heavy industrial machinery from Switzerland for the Boeing plant there.
On departure, the An-124 lost an engine and was grounded for four days while a spare engine was delivered and installed.

The world's largest commercial freighter aircraft, the 250 tonne capacity Antonov 225, is on course to reappear at next month's Paris Air Show and could begin cargo carrying operations in October.
But as the giant Soviet-built aircraft, designed to carry the Russian space shuttle, prepares for take-off after eight years on the ground, a smaller cousin, the Ilyushin 76, is reluctantly set to leave the European air charter market due to noise regulations.
In January, HeavyLift split from Russian airline Volga Dnepr, ending an eight-year alliance that successfully operated the AN124 against the rival partnership of Air Foyle and Kiev planemaker Antonov.
