This shared mathematical understanding is as important for students who will enter the workplace as it is for those who will pursue further study in mathematics and science.
All students should study mathematics in each of the four years that they are enrolled in high school.
Because students' interests and aspirations may change during and after high school, their mathematics education should guarantee access to a broad spectrum of career and educational options.

Coming to Our Senses: Reconnecting Mathematics Understanding to Sensory Experience (ResearchIndex)
Abstract: mathematical concepts, just as abstract concepts in general, are metaphorical and are built from people's sensory experiences (Lakoff and Nuez, 1997; Lakoff and Johnson, 1999).
Therefore, teaching mathematics necessarily requires teaching the metaphorical structure of mathematics.
This should have the beneficial effect of dispelling the myth that mathematics is literal, is inherent in the structure of the universe, and exists independent of human minds.

CSUF :: NSM :: Press Releases :: Q and A with Mathematics Professor David Pagni
More than six years ago, mathematics professor David L. Pagni became a math wizard as the donned a pointed sorcerer's hat, put on a colorful sorcerer's robe and waved a magic wand, much to the delight of a gaggle of wide-eyed children at Henniger Elementary School in Santa Ana.
But it was the tall, lanky, bearded math professor, a picture-perfect wizard, who delighted young audience members as he told them they could all be math wizards themselves with the help of a program that later became known as SUMS (Students Using Math Successfully).
David L. Pagni, professor of mathematics, received a $6 million National Science Foundation grant six years ago to make a systemic change in the way math is taught in the Santa Ana Unified School District.

I work in teacher (mathematics) education so while I work with adults and numeracy, it is not in the sense of most communicators on the list.
Consider that some domains of mathematics (maybe all, maybe most?) are nothing more than the external capturing of those internal, natural, automatic "calculations" and "math-ing" we do in order to move around our environment and do things.
And for this, and many other reasons (e.g., changing views of mathematics and mathematics learning), the mathematics education community is working to develop more "authentic" assessments for a more "authentic" mathematics curriculum.
