		Kurt Cobain came across a Raincoats album, and found there a bunch of soul mates whose honest emotions affected him so much that he tracked down founder member Ana da Silva somewhere in Notting Hill, persuaded DGC (Nirvana's record label) to re-issue The Raincoats back catalogue and encouraged the band to re-form.
		In 1977 da Silva and Gina Birch, inspired by the example of the Pistols and The Clash, of course, but also by the women of The Slits and X-ray Spex, had responded to punk's diy call to arms and eventually persuaded The Slits' drummer Palmolive to join their ranks.
		Anas feline vocals stretch and arch, sensually, playfully sultry, elegant yet still tinged with that great punk attitude we know so well from her work with the Raincoats!

		The Raincoats' reunion spurred Da Silva and the rest of the group to write new songs, resulting in the band's fifth album, 1996's Looking in the Shadows.
		Da Silva resurfaced in early 2005 with Lighthouse, a largely electronic collection of songs that she wrote, recorded, and produced entirely by herself.

		As the album opens the digital sound is immediately apparent and over this the haunting vocals of Da Silva sound beautiful but as is expected from a record shaped around one small instrument, as the songs progress the sound fails to evolve.
		Only in ‘Modinha’ though (the one track that’s sounds are produced from more than the one digital instrument) does Da Silva achieve the kind of musical soundscape that compliments her creative vocals sufficiently.
		I doubt that more than a talented few could produce an album of this quality from one instrument and although it may not show a solo artist who is complete it does represent an exciting sound from an artist who has in the past earned the right to do what she wants, complete or not.

		Ana Da Silva was once the lead singer in grunge frontrunners The Raincoats and saw herself getting referenced as inspiration by everyone from laughing boy Kurt Cobain through to Sonic Youth.
		Thankfully for us she's decided to leave her baggy jumper days behind her and instead focus the creative energies on a fusion of folk, elecro(nica) and multi instrumentation which is both digitally smooth and wonkily organic without any of the contradictions that should imply.
		With a vocal style that bears obvious comparisons with Björk ('Hospital Window') and The Concrete's Victoria Bergsman ('The Lighthouse'), Da Silva has a light and breezy voice which belies it's ability to soar when the subject matter requires or, as on 'In Awe of a Painting', take on a dead-pan urgency.

		Over a quarter-century ago, Ana Da Silva’s groundbreaking art-pop ensemble, the Raincoats, provided a teenage Kurt Cobain some "very few moments of peace" (his words), never mind hand-me-down fodder for nearly all post- Nirvana rock.
		A Twin Peaks ambience floats throughout the disc, most notably on the instrumental "Hospital Window." Da Silva’s playful vocals, which seem recorded through a rose-tinted microphone, sparkle with Björk-like innocence, with the exception of "Modinha," her cover of the Man From Ipanema’s aching classic.
		As with the Raincoats, Da Silva’s voice rarely stays on pitch, but The Lighthouse drips with traditionally tuneful beauty and stunning electro-innovation will no doubt inspire generations to come.
