Patients' Guide to Local and Regional Anaesthesia
Regional anaesthesia means blocking the nerve supply to part of the body, such as an arm, so the patient cannot feel pain in that area.
Spinal anaesthesia is especially useful during TURP surgery, as it allows the patient to detect side effects of the washing solution used in the bladder (it makes their vision fade temporarily) and it encourages clotting in the cut blood vessels.
Epidural or extradural anaesthesia uses a larger volume of anaesthetic, positioned in the fat and veins further away from the spinal cord.

Anaesthesia has had a fantastic year; and to celebrate, the best content from 2004 is now free to all researchers.
It was therefore with some trepidation that the Editorial Board of Anaesthesia decided to publish the Difficult Airway Society’s guidelines on unanticipated difficult intubation, even though this sort of invaluable guidance on the management of a rare condition can only ever arise from the measured deliberations of experts.

Spinal anaesthesia is not contraindicated in patients with coronary artery disease.
Intraoperatively, spinal anaesthesia alone might be expected to confer an advantage over a combined technique due to the unloading of the heart and the avoidance of negatively inotropic general anaesthetic agents.
Although the benefits of spinal anaesthesia over general anaesthesia with respect to cardiac morbidity reduction remain unproven, there is no reason to believe that morbidity is increased provided that there is a clear understanding of the haemodynamic effects and of the requirement for appropriate and timely intervention.

They do not consider their methods of acupuncture anaesthesia to be perfect, but they look upon it as a subject that is being evaluated and developed all the time.
It is a safe and considerably less dangerous procedure than general anaesthesia, it is safer for the old and disabled, postoperative recovery is far swifter, it is a very cheap and simple form of anaesthesia, and the physiological functions of the body, such as the pulse rate and blood pressure, remain consistently stable during anaesthesia.
Acupuncture anaesthesia is a fascinating application of acupuncture; perhaps, in the West, it could be used for postoperative analgesia rather than anaesthesia.

 Epidural Anaesthesia (page 1)
Epidural anaesthesia can be used as sole anaesthetic for procedures involving the lower limbs, pelvis, perineum and lower abdomen.
It is possible to perform upper abdominal and thoracic procedures under epidural anaesthesia alone, but the height of block required, with its attendant side effects, make it difficult to avoid significant patient discomfort and risk.
The advantage of epidural over spinal anaesthesia is the ability to maintain continuous anaesthesia after placement of an epidural catheter, thus making it suitable for procedures of long duration.
