The first hotel was built along the river by businessman Benjamin J. Dillingham, who also built a railroad from Honolulu to the north shore in 1898.

Using the valley of the Anahulu River on Oahu's northwest coast as a case study, they chronicle the changes that swept through 19th-century Hawaii.
The authors trace "an historic course set by a determinate cultural scheme," attempting to show how "capitalism realized itself through the mediation of a set of Hawaiian structures." In doing so, they have charted the intersection of world history and the specifics of Hawaiian life.

This quiet little town, nestled comfortably along Oahu's North Shore, is a complete 180-degree turn from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki.
More than a century ago, before Waikiki built its first hotel, visionary businessman Benjamin J. Dillingham opened Hawaii s finest lodging on a small strip of land between the Pacific Ocean and the Anahulu River.
He named the grand Victorian hotel "Haleiwa," which means "House of the Iwa." The graceful frigate bird, he said, best exemplified the ambience he wanted to create for the hotel.

Little significance should be attached to any change noted in the fish or macrobenthic communities residing on the Barbers Point diffuser because of the variable quality of the data generated by use of the remotely controlled video system.
The flashy nature of the rainfall events in the hydrologic unit, the short times of concentration, the distances between the five separate drainage areas, and the time required to travel to potential sampling sites precluded the use of grab samples; thus the only practical alternative was the use of stream-height-activated automatic water samplers.
With the financial limits dictated by the funding for first phase of the study, coupled with the need for expensive automatic water samplers, only two drainage areas, Anahulu River and Opaeula Stream, which flow to Waialua and Kaiaka bays, respectively, were monitored to ascertain baseline water quality concentrations and constituent loadings.
