Anakie is located 305 km west of Rockhampton on the Capricorn Highway and 951 km from Brisbane.

Anakie township is off the highway about 45km from Emerald; Sapphire is 9km north of Anakie, and Rubyvale a further 8km.
Though well worked, the Anakie Fields are the best place for the newcomer to pick up tips; old hands proceed directly to the Willows, 27km west of Anakie.
Gems were first discovered in 1870 near Anakie but until Thai buyers came onto the scene a century later operations were low-key, and even today there are still solo fossickers making a living from their claims.

 Australian Sapphires
The Anakie field which is located 43km west of Emerald covers an area of about 900km2 and includes the townships of Anakie, Sapphire, Rubyvale and Willows.
On the Anakie field sapphires occur in Tertiary and Quaternary alluvial deposits derived from the weathering and erosion of alkali-volcanic rocks, mainly basaltic lavas, pyroclastics and volcaniclastics of Tertiary age and underlying Palaeozoic basement rocks.
The basement of the Anakie field consists of old metamorphic rocks and sediments of Late Proterozoic to Ordovician age (600 to 435 million years) known as the Anakie Metamorphics and Fork Lagoons beds, and granitoids of the Retreat Batholith which were intruded into them in Devonian times (350 to 380 million years).

I visited in September 2002, and whilst photographing the Anakie Fairy Park I could not help but notice the town has a more generous than normal supply of CMPs.
No CMPs here, but I just had to share this picture of the entrance to the park which is built on a granite outcrop on Mt. Anakie.

The smoke issuing from the direction of Anakie was an ominous sight and didn't auger well for what lay ahead.
On the drive back into Anakie you could already see the spot fires occurring in the paddocks just to the north of the town.

 Davey - Sprinkler system saves Anakie home
A sprinkler system for householders in highly bushfire-exposed locations has demonstrated its effectiveness in a major fire that engulfed the Anakie district of Victoria in the last week of January.
This Anakie home was saved from destruction by bushfire by a Blaze Control bushfire sprinkler system supplied by a Davey Firefighter engine powered pump.
The latest incident at Anakie is the third of the sprinkler installations where a total save has been effected.

Similar rocks and volcanic terrains are found throughout the highlands of eastern Australia, and extend from Cooktown to Tasmania.
On the Anakie field basaltic lavas, pyroclastics and underlying granitic and metamorphic rocks were weathered and eroded to form alluvial deposits in a Tertiary palaeodrainage system.
The smaller Lava Plains field differs markedly from the Anakie field in that the basalts that host the sapphires are very much in evidence on the field.
