Animation - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Animation refers to the process in which each frame of a film or movie is produced individually, whether generated as a computer graphic, or by photographing a drawn image, or by repeatedly making small changes to a model (see claymation and stop motion), and then photographing the result.
Because animation is very time-consuming and often very expensive to produce, the majority of animation for TV and movies comes from professional animation studios.
The first animated cartoon was from Frenchman Émile Reynaud, who created praxynoscope, animation system of 12 pictures, and films of about 500~600 pictures, projected on its own théatre optique, system near from modern film projector, at Musée Grévin in Paris, France, the october 28, 1892.

Scanimate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scanimate is the name for an analog computer animation system developed from the late 1960s to the early 1980s.
The Scanimate systems were used to produce much of the video-based animation seen on television between the late 1970s and early 1980s in commercials, promotions, and show openings.
The speed with which animation could be produced on the system because of this, as well as its range of possible effects, helped it to supersede film-based animation techniques for television graphics.

Cartoon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Because of the stylistic similarities between comic strips and early animated movies, "cartoon" came to refer to animation, and this is the sense in which "cartoon" is most commonly used today.
Although the term can be applied to any animated presentation, it is most often used in reference to programs for children, featuring anthropomorphized animals, superheroes, the adventures of child protagonists, and other related genres.
Animated material which does not fit the traditional conventions of Western animation, such as Japanese anime is less often called a "cartoon", but this varies.

Digital Harmony: The Life of John Whitney, Computer Animation Pioneer
Computers were originally developed as part of the British and American World War II defense efforts.
By contrast, John Whitney's computer films grew continually more intricate in their exploration of a genuine aesthetic goal: the establishment of a secure basis for harmonic events in audio-visual presentation.
Although the compositions were linked to the particular computer set-up, and defied many attempts to copy them onto film and video, Whitney continued to compose new visual-music pieces until his death in 1995.

 comp.graphics.animation FAQ v3.3 (7 Mar)
Computer animation is a large and growing field, and people want different things from it; this FAQ tries to cover all bases, and as a result is rather thin on many of them!
Although it's an advantage (both for the animator and the software) to integrate as many stages as possible in the one package, and most `animation' packages do so, in practice all packages have their relative merits and work may be swapped from package to package to exploit their strengths, especially in `high end' studios.
2-D animation packages mostly replicate the processes of cel-based animation, where "key-frames" are used to plot the course of the animation, and the "inbetweens" (interpolating the keys) are filled in later (by an animator, not the computer).

 Halfbakery: MIDI-derived computer animation
Since I imagine the input to many computer animation packages is paramter-based (i.e., values for location, shape, velocity, texture, color, etc.), why can't you generate values for those parameters by transforming output from a MIDI system.
It produces live computer animations of rain-storms and kaleidoscopic effects, paying attention to the pitch, attack-velocity, sustain, and harmonic content of the MIDI stream.
He used prerecorded MIDI to drive animation - prerecorded so that he could anticipate events (e.g., so that a ball would fly through the air and hit a gong at the moment the sound is heard).

As a then state of the art piece of computer imaging, one which entailed the digital translation and mutation of cinematographic, analog images, this effect shows off the superiority of its photo-realism to that of the then standard CGI surface rendering options.
Composed of a field of squares alternately fl and white, the floor schematises the computer screen's field of pixels and, more fundamentally still, the simple alternatives of the binary code-"off" or "on", "0" or "1"-that are the building blocks of digital circuitry in computer chips.

 The Computer Animation FAQ
Most computer animation takes place in the 3-D world, as our world is itself basically 3-D, and model interpolation becomes a problem in fewer dimensions, due to a lack of context.
Almost all `computer animation' done today is done within the "event-based" or, interchangeably, "track-based" computer animation paradigm, which is based loosely on the key-framing system used in cel-based animation.
Particle systems are also a good way to animate groups of animals such as herds and flocks of birds, by treating each individual member as a particle and defining actions such as "follow the first particle" and having forces that make each particle repel each other at a close distance.
