Analog hole - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The analog hole (sometimes analog reconversion problem or analog reconversion issue) is a fundamental vulnerability in copy prevention schemes for noninteractive digital content which is intended to be played back using analog means.
Although the technical possibility of making digital recordings from analog outputs has existed for some time, it was not necessarily viewed as a "hole" before widespread deployments of DRM in the late 1990s.
The term "analog hole" was first popularized by the Motion Picture Association of America and some of its members during speeches and legislative advocacy in 2002; this term later fell into disrepute within the industry, being replaced by "analog reconversion problem" and similar terms.

The analog connection between HD source components and displays is referred to as the "analog hole" by the content community, and they want to plug the hole.
Others, such as myself, believe that the "analog hole" was created by the content community by their refusal to support standards such as IEEE 1394 with 5C copy protection years ago, before manufacturers geared up digital television production.

The Analog Hole refers to a fundamental vulnerability in copy protection schemes for digital content which is intended to be played back using analog means.
When the information is converted to analog form, there are no restrictions on the resulting analog signal, and the content can be captured back into digital form with no restrictions.
Though this kind of reproduction is not a digital copy, and therefore may have flaws, depending on the quality of reproduction methods used.

Cruelty to Analog: And MPAA Sayeth, Let There Be 5 States for Analog
The work of the ARDG is to develop a fix for the "analog hole" -- the fact that anything that emerges from an analog output can easily be redigitized.
In their view, since all digital outputs will be hobbled by "content protection" technology, we must plug the "analog hole" to somehow make sure that the analog output stays at least as hobbled as the digital.
If you think analog is only good for supporting legacy devices, then your view of the "analog hole problem" is likely to be very different from someone who thinks of analog outputs as an innovation opportunity.

 EFF: EFFector Vol. 16, No. 34, December 4, 2003
In an effort to solve this "analog hole" or "analog reconversion" problem, the studios have convened a group called the Analog Reconversion Discussion Group (ARDG), which recently solicited proposals from a number of companies for a solution.
In the name of "parity" or "equality" between analog and digital video signals, they have proposed to eliminate, by law, much of the flexibility that the public currently enjoys in its use of analog video.
In response to the proposals for plugging the analog hole, EFF has filed comments with the ARDG that will be included in its final report.

The "analog hole" refers to a different MPAA legislative push, which does relate to regulating analog-to-digital converters because they can digitize video signals (and the result will be free of use restrictions).
MPAA started talking about them at around the same time, and the continued existence of the analog hole is one of several significant weaknesses in the broadcast flag scheme.
MPAA now prefers the term "analog reconversion problem" to "analog hole" -- too bad for them they did such a good job promoting their original term.

At Wednesday's CPTWG meeting, attendees heard reports from proponents of the formation of a new CPTWG sub-group, to be called the "Analog Working Group" or the "Analog Issues Discussion Group".
Although the group would not be charged with developing legislation, it is difficult to imagine that any recommended measure to control digitization could be widely implemented voluntarily.
We've discussed the "Analog Hole" before, and noted that Hollywood studios have called for the formation of an "inter-industry" discussion forum on this topic.

 THE BASICS OF DIGITAL TELEVISION
While analog and digital television broadcasts have a modulated carrier wave, the way that signal is modulated is quite different.
Analog TV uses an amplitude-modulated (AM) signal for pictures and frequency modulation (FM) for audio, while DTV signals use digital "packets", or bursts of data, to transmit pictures and audio.
Switching from an analog TV system that is subject to impulse noise, ghosts, color errors, and "snow" to an all-digital system will make a tremendous difference.

It's analogous to certain ink techniques for printed documents that are nearly invisible but become highly visible on photocopies of the document, thereby making it clear that the document is not an original.
The DarkNoise technology is meant to address what media industry people call the "analog hole," i.e., the idea that there is no way to prevent copying of content when it's in analog form, such as recording a CD onto an audio tape, scanning and OCR-ing a publication, or camcording a movie in a theater.
Yet as much as the media industry bemoans the analog hole, media company copyright lawyers always offer it up as a sort of "workaround" to rigid DRM schemes for digital content as a way to exercise private copying or other so-called fair use rights.

 Digital Television: An Overview
Because DTV signals cannot be received through the existing analog television broadcasting system (known as NTSC (7)) the FCC decided to phase in DTV over a period of years, so that consumers would not have to immediately purchase new digital television sets or converters.

Consumers can continue to use analog TV sets until the broadcasters return the analog TV licenses to the FCC, after which, a set-top digital converter box could be used to enable the analog TV set to receive the DTV signal.

The analog hole has been defined by Richard Parsons, CEO of AOL Time Warner at the Senate Judiciary Hearing of March 14th, 2002 as: “Video content, even when delivered digitally in a protected manner, must be converted to an unprotected analog format to be viewed on the millions of analog television sets in consumer homes.
Technology to address the “analog hole” exists and can be applied to provide the protection necessary to prevent unauthorized redistribution of broadcast content and help ensure consumers can benefit from new content, distributed in new ways, using the new technologies that are becoming increasingly widespread.
However structured, the work to address the “analog hole” needs to be completed coincident with proposals to adopt or mandate use of the broadcast flag in order to provide the necessary protection of unencrypted digital broadcast television.
