Signal processing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Signal processing is the processing, amplification and interpretation of signals and deals with the analysis and manipulation of signals.
Signals can be either analog or digital, and may come from various sources.
For analog signals, signal processing may involve the amplification and filtering of audio signals for audio equipment or the modulation and demodulation of signals for telecommunications.

Digital signal processing (DSP) is the study of signals in a digital representation and the processing methods of these signals.
DSP and analog signal processing are subfields of signal processing.
Since the goal of DSP is usually to measure or filter continuous real-world analog signals, the first step is usually to convert the signal from an analog to a digital form, by using an analog to digital converter.

Analog Devices: Analog Dialogue: Integrated Solutions for CCD Signal Processing
Today, all of the signal processing steps required--from the output of the CCD through the digital output of the A/D converter--can be accomplished with a single integrated circuit.
Noise in the AFE consists of wideband noise from all of the analog circuitry, wideband noise from the ADC, and quantization noise from the ADC.
Now that good analog performance is possible with standard CMOS processes, it should become feasible to integrate some or all of the back-end digital processing of the imaging system onto a single chip to meet the needs of a specific application.

 Digital Signal Processing Hearing Aids
A digital signal processing hearing aid operates in a fundamentally different manner from an analog hearing aid or a digitally programmable analog signal processing hearing aid, but - and this is crucial - the output from a DSP aid is still amplified acoustic energy.
By converting ongoing speech signals to binary electrical impulses, it is possible to manipulate them through a digital signal processor (just as in a computer) in ways that cannot be accomplished with analog hearing aids.
After learning all (or something) about "digital signal processing" and how to program these aids on people, it is understandable that some audiologists would be, at the least, unconsciously biased in their favor.

The Rebirth of Computer Music by Analog Signal Processing
An analog signal processing architecture is proposed consisting of a memoryless, multidimensional nonlinear function generator, a linear time-invariant system simulator, a non-volatile store, and interface, calibration, and control modules.
Digital computers and music synthesizers displaced their analog counterparts for a good and practical reason: It was cheaper to exploit developments in component and integration technologies with digital signal processing rather than analog techniques.
With analog systems, conversely the problems and systems cost associated with connecting computing nodes are minor compared to those associated with designing the basic computing elements to meet performance requirements in the areas of component parameter spread, signal/noise ratio, distortion and crosstalk.

Analog signal processing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Analog signal processing is any signal processing conducted on analog signals by analog means.
Specifically the mathematical algorithm that processes the signal is implemented with analog electronics in which the mathematical values are represented as a continuous physical quantity, an analog, usually as a voltage, electric current, or electric charge around some components in the electronic devices.
A small error or noise affecting such physical quantities will result in a corresponding error in the signals represented by such physical quantites.

Analog Signal Processing - Siemens Audiology Group   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Analog hearing instruments consist in principle of three blocks: the microphone, which picks up sound and converts it into electrical signals, the amplifier, which processes the signal according to the degree of hearing loss (preamplifier) and then transmits it in amplified form to the hearing coil (endstage amplifier).
The hearing coil converts the amplified electrical signals by way of a vibrating membrane back to acoustical waves and returns them to the ear, where they can then be heard louder than in their original form.
The digital programming of analog hearing instruments, as is possible with the SWING and MUSIC families, represents a big step forward, which optimizes computer-supported individual hearing instrument fittings using a number of controls, while still maintaing the tiniest hearing instrument size.

But, as the authors of this groundbreaking guide demonstrate, finding solutions to most analog signal processing problems does not have to be that difficult.
Analog Signal Processing presents an original, five-step, design-oriented approach to solving analog signal processing problems using standard ICs as building blocks.
The five steps of their approach move from signal classification, definition of desired functions, and description of analog domain conversions to error classification and error analysis.

Fully-differential analog signal processing provides several advantages over single-ended analog signal processing, including immunity to external common-mode noise, even-order distortion rejection, and double the available dynamic range for any given voltage supply range.
The dynamic range of an amplifier is the relationship between the minimum detectable signal (MDS) at the output of the amplifier and the amplifier's full-scale output swing, as given in equation (1).
However, the two-fold increase in dynamic range afforded by a fully-differential signal processing solution is often touted as a primary benefit.

I describe a general framework, called translinear analog signal processing (TASP), for implementing continuous-time analog signal processing systems that have a wide dynamic range and can operate with a low power-supply voltage.
Such analog signal processing systems are highly modular, comprising only grounded capacitors, constant current sources, and simple circuit primitives called multiple-input translinear elements (MITEs).
Moreover, the behavior of a TASP system is well described in terms of commonly used linear and nonlinear signal processing functions.
