  Analysis
It is the aim of this article to indicate something of the range of conceptions of analysis in the history of philosophy and their interconnections, and to provide a bibliographical resource for those wishing to explore analytic methodologies and the philosophical issues that they raise.
Analysis came to be seen as a method of discovery, working back from what is ordinarily known to the underlying reasons (demonstrating ‘the fact’), and synthesis as a method of proof, working forwards again from what is discovered to what needed explanation (demonstrating ‘the reason why’).
Initial research on conceptions of analysis in the history of philosophy was undertaken whilst a Research Fellow at the Institut für Philosophie of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg during 1999-2000, funded by the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung.

On the one hand, philosophy is respected as the ultimate repository of answers to such big questions as "What is the meaning of life?" and is considered to be the only repository available by those people no longer able to look to religion for the ultimate resolution to their existential crises.
The concepts of philosophy employed by philosophers and by non philosophers are equally impoverished because they bear so few points of contact with each other, but we may avoid gross injustice to either party by describing philosophy as the rigorous examination of issues which cannot be resolved through empirical procedures such as observation or experiment.
Philosophy really is, in part, that inquiry whose special concern is to think seriously about such questions as "Is there a God?" "Are values objective?" and "Is your mind distinct from your brain?" It isn't a fund of final answers to these questions.

 Analytic Philosophy
The term "Analytic Philosophy" was applied during the twentieth century to the dominant philosophical tradition in English speaking academia, and has been applied retrospectively to the philosophical tradition stretching back through millenia before it.
It is interesting to contrast the development of philosophy in the 20th century with the "soft sciences", which have embraced mathematical methods.
Analytic philosophy has evaded the adoption of formal techniques by positioning itself in an area which is little assisted by deductive reasoning, and which is properly considered an empirical science, the study of the English language.

20th WCP: An Ecological Organic Paradigm: A Framework of Analysis for Moral and Political Philosophy
This framework of analysis of four functional cognitive capacities and their inter-relationship to four general dimensions of experience will be referred to as the ecological organic paradigm.
As a category of analysis, it is meant to accommodate both religious concepts of the soul and secular concepts of the self.
The organic paradigm was thus eventually replaced in moral and political philosophy primarily by the concept of the social contract, which begins with the premise that all persons are born free and equal in a state of nature.

Conceptions of Analysis in Analytic Philosophy: A Supplement to Analysis
The emergence of logical analysis as the distinctive form of analysis in early analytic philosophy is outlined in §6 of the main document.
It was logical analysis that was involved in Russell's celebrated theory of descriptions, first presented in ‘On Denoting’ in 1905, which Ramsey called a ‘paradigm of philosophy’ and which played a major role in the establishment of analytic philosophy.
Not only may logical analysis, in the sense of ‘translating’ into a logical language, still have value in freeing us from misleading views of language, but ‘connective’ analysis is still worthy of being called ‘analysis’ (as we shall see in the next three sections).

Issues in legal philosophy range from abstract conceptual questions about the nature of law and legal systems to normative questions about the relation between law and morality and the justification for various legal institutions.
As Brian Leiter (1998) points out, philosophy of law is one of the few philosophical disciplines that takes conceptual analysis as its principal concern; most other areas in philosophy have taken a naturalistic turn, incorporating the tools and methods of the sciences.
So-called outsider jurisprudence is concerned with providing an analysis of the ways in which law is structured to promote the interests of white males and to exclude females and persons of color.
