It is stated, however, in the text, that children were burned in sacrifice to Anammelech in Samaria; and this is perhaps inconsistent with the fact that there is no evidence that such offerings were ever made in Babylonia.
The worship of Adrammelech (who is mentioned with Anammelech) and Anammelech is accompanied by the sacrifice of children by fire: "The Sepharvites burnt their children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim" (2 Kings 17:31).
First, there is no evidence in cuneiform literature that would point to the presence of human sacrifice, by fire or otherwise, as part of the ritual; nor has it been shown that the sculptures or bas-reliefs deny this thesis.

Even in northern Babylonia the burning alive of infants, as a sacrifice to the Melech group of gods, spread, for “the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammalech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim” (II Kings xvii, 31).
Excavations in the Canaanite levels of all the mounds explored by archaeologists have revealed jars in large numbers containing the bones of newborn infants, buried under the house corners and thresholds and beneath the floors of the sacred high places.
Moloch is also supposed to be the same with Adrammelech and Anammelech, gods of the Sepharvaim.

It was a simple, confused notion of theirs: but it brought a blessing with it; for the king of Assyria sent them one of the Jewish priests who had been carried away from Samaria; and he came and lived at Beth-el, and taught them to fear the Lord.
So these poor people got some confused notion of the one true God: but they mixed it up sadly with their old heathen idolatry, and made gods of their own, and some of them even burnt their children in the fire, to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim, from which town they had come.
And so they went on for several hundred years, marrying with the remnant of the Israelites who were left behind, and worshipping idols and the true God at the same time.

Secondly, the god that was worshipped at Sippar was neither Adrammelech nor Anammelech but Samas.
It is improbable, as some would urge, that Adrammelech is a secondary title of the tutelary god of Sippar; then it would have to be shown that Anu enjoyed special reverence in this city which was especially consecrated to the worship of the Sun-god.
