Topic: Anamorphosis

  Anamorphosis
Technically, "the illusional art of anamorphosis, [is] a method of visual distortion whereby an image is presented in a confused or hidden form.
The visual schemata that form the mathematical and conceptual foundation of anamorphosis express delight in transversing the boundaries of mathematical physics, aesthetics, and embodiment.
This course will explore anamorphosis as a practice and theory that reveals the creative depth to interdisciplinary projects that work simultaneously at the surface of representation and the techno-scientific sub terrain of media and embodied cognition.

An anamorphosis is a distorted projection or perspective; especially an image distorted in such a way that it becomes visible only when viewed in a special manner.
There are two main types of anamorphosises, the first being perspective anamorphosis (or oblique anamorphosis), which was already in use during the early renaissance (15th century).
The other type is called the mirror anamorphosis (or catoptric anamorphosis), occurring at the time of the baroque (17th century).

The process known as anamorphosis or anamorphic projection in art is at once a confirmation and a challenge to the rules of linear perspective and the conventions of representation.
Witnessing the anamorphosis, several "readings" occur simultaneously: the memory of the phallic signifier; the dislocation or removal of the self from the "proper" viewing position at stage center--that is, a re-enactment of the primordial anxiety of Castration; and finally a view of the void, that is, of death itself.
Anamorphosis is a technique for bringing what still remains outside the field of the gaze into the line of sight and into consciousness.

 What is anamorphosis?
An anamorphosis is a deformed image that appears in its true shape when viewed in some "unconventional" way.
Oblique anamorphosis is closely related to an artistic technique called trompe l'oeil (French for "deceiving the eye", pronounced "tromp loy").
For an anamorphosis, the viewer is presented with something that does not make sense when viewed conventionally, and so he or she must seek out the unconventional viewpoint from which the trick is resolved.

 Anamorphosis
Anamorphosis is a projection of forms outside their visible limits.
Anamorphosis has raised crucial questions for architectural representation since the seventh century when epistemological conditions for modern thought and architecture were first articulated.
By manipulating the theory of perspective, anamorphosis revealed potential discontinuity between an object present to perception and its visual appearance, complicating the relationship between building and drawing, and between design and construction.

 Enculturation: Heather Dubnick on Borges
Anamorphosis displays the distortion and limitation of one-point perspective by concealing an object and revealing it only from an oblique vantage point [figs.1, 2].
Anamorphosis demands that the spectator situate his body at a particular angle in order to see the image; the Aleph permits Borges to see “the circulation of [his] own dark blood” (A Borges Reader 161) and, on another level, to see the reader’s face.
The term anamorphosis “refers to a drawing or painting which is so executed as to give a distorted image of the object represented but which, if viewed from a certain point or reflected in a curved mirror, shows the object in true proportion” (The Oxford Companion to Art 43).

The rendering software allow to work on the anamorphosis texture, both from the point of view that offers the deformed image, as well as from the point of view which perceives the correct image.
Although even this type of anamorphosis, as well as that perspective, demands a bound view to return a perfect illusion, a certain liberty of movement is nevertheless allowed around the object, to the point that you almost have the feeling of the tridimensionality.
And perhaps this is the reason for the great success obtained by the anamorphoses, which, as the perspective drawings, have given space to the sacred as well as to the profane.

Anamorphosis is demonstrated by even the simplest visible sample; its power lies in its ability to extend, as a logic of concealment, to non-visual situations.
Stated as a general principle, anamorphosis is the idea that multiple meanings can be materially and mutually supported within the same material circumstances.
A contrasting but equally informative view of anamorphosis involves taking into account the pleasure or pain caused by the lack or surplus that prevents closure of the "circle" of desire.

Anamorphosis refers to a process where an image is drawn in a distorted, often monstrous way, yet when viewed from a certain angle (direct anamorphosis) or with a particular type of reflective surface (catoptric anamorphosis), reveals to the viewer an image that they can readily recognise.
The largest existing example of direct anamorphosis and a splendid early example of the technique is that found in the Convent of SS.
At the time Italian artists could understand and execute anamorphic paintings, this particular version was produced using a complex set of strings, yet it was not until the 17th in France that the scientists, philosophers, mathematicians and physicists could explain its complex geometry.
