The Indian state of Gujarat was created in 1960 out of the 17 northern districts of former Bombay State: Ahmedabad, Amreli, Banaskantha, Bharuch, Bhavnagar, Dang, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Kheda, Kutch, Mehsana, Panchmahal, Rajkot, Sabarkantha, Surat, Surendranagar, and Vadodara.
In 1964 Gandhinagar district was formed from parts of Ahmedabad and Mahesana, and in 1966 Valsad district was split from Surat.
On October 2 1997 Anand district was split from Kheda, Dahod district was split from Panchmahal, Narmada District was split from Bharuch, Navsari District was split from Valsad, and Porbandar district was split from Junagadh.

A BJP worker was stabbed and four persons were injured in separate incidents of violence in Anand district as elections to 23 district and 209 taluka panchayats, besides 49 municipalities, were held in Gujarat today.
Polling was held for 723 seats in district panchayats, 3,735 seats in taluka panchayats and 1,737 seats in the municipalities, official sources said here.
Elections are not being held in two district panchayats (Kheda and Banaskanatha), 16 taluka panchayats and 121 municipalities as their terms have not yet expired.

 Law students move court on copying case
ANAND, April 21: Two law students of Sardar Patel University (SPU) have moved the civil court here for allegedly being treated wrongly by a senior supervisor during university examination.
Both petitioned the Anand district civil judge (senior division) court for injunction and a directive to SPU to give the exam again.
The court directed that as the examination committee is a quasi-judicial body, unless a decision was taken by the committee, the court cannot interfere in the matter.

AHMEDABAD, May 17: The Anand district police have arrested four members of a gang accused of being involved in robberies, murders and rapes on the highways of Central Gujarat.
Anand district police chief said that Arif Ibrahim Vora and Yousuf Gulam Rasul, who were suspected of being involved in the robbery of Rs 1.5 lakh and the murder of a businessman on the Sevalia-Anand road last November, were nabbed, along with the Matador van they used during their robberies.
Another gang of Daffero community was nabbed from Vadodara-Anand highway during night patrolling, the Anand district police said.
