According to the Buddha's teaching in the anapanasati Sutra, practicing mindfulness of breathing meditation as a part of the Noble Eightfold Path leads to the removal of all defilements (kleśas) and finally the attainment of Nibbana.
Buddha's teaching was based on his own experience in using anapanasati as part of his means of achieving his own enlightenment.
Anapanasati meditation is normally practiced either in conjunction with vipassanā; meditation, with zazen, or zen meditation in the soto Zen tradition (shikantaza).

 Anapanasati FAQ - 1
Some teachers seem to teach Anapanasati differently than the way I think that it was taught at Suan Mokkh.
Don't forget: the purpose of anapanasati is the quenching of dukkha through letting go of all attachment to "I" and "mine." Developing the "Dhamma tools" needed to experience and contemplate the vipassana of the last four lessons (experience not technique) doesn't happen by wandering around.
Although this is extremely common in anapanasati practice, and perhaps all forms of meditation, it also leads us to explore what attachment is all about.

 ANAPANASATI
With anapanasati we stay with an object that is quite neutral — we don’t have any strong feelings of like or dislike for our breath — and just note the beginning of an inhalation, its middle and its end, then the beginning of an exhalation, its middle and end.
So the right attitude to anapanasati is being very patient, having all the time in the world, letting go or discarding all worldly, personal or financial problems.
The same with anapanasati: we recognize the way it is now and start from there, we sustain our attention a little longer, and we begin to understand what concentration is. Don’t make Superman resolutions when you’re not Superman.

The true aim of the Anapanasati Sutta is nothing less than final liberation from suffering which is the highest goal of the Lord Buddha's Teachings--Nibbána.
Moreover, the Anapanasati Sutta shows that the Lord Buddha taught only one kind of meditation that is by simultaneously developing both the jhanas and wisdom.
