Institute for Social Ecology - To Remember Spain: The Anarcist and Syndicalist Revolution of 1936
Although they contain a general overview and evaluation of the Anarchist and Anarchosyndicalist movements (the two should be clearly distinguished) in the three-year struggle at the end of the 1930s, they are not intended to be a full account of those complex events.
With the slow change in the social composition of the CNT and the growing supremacy of industrial over village values in its leadership and membership, it is my view that the confederation would have eventually turned into a fairly conventional Latin-type of trade union.
Anarchosyndicalist needs were met by requiring that every faísta become a member of the CNT and by making the union the principal arena of anarchist activity in Spain.

Early in the century, the Spanish anarchocommunists, influenced primarily by Juan Baron and Francisco Cardinal, the editors of Tierra y Libertad, furiously denounced the anarchosyndicalists who were later to forrn the CNT as 'deserters' and 'reformists'.
The record of the anarchosyndicalist movement has been one of the most abysmal in the history of anarchism generally.
In the United States, lest present-day anarchosyndicalists get carried away by legendary movements like the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), they should be advised that this syndicalist movement, like others elsewhere, was by no means committed to anarchism.

In the essays that make up this book, Murray Bookchin places the Spanish Anarchist and Anarchosyndicalist movements of the 1930s in the context of revolutionary workers movements of the preWorld War II era.
They form indispensable supplements to Bookchins larger 1977 history of the anarchist and anarchosyndicalist movements prior to the outbreak of the revolution and civil war, The Spanish Anarchists: The Heroic Years, 18681936 (to be reprinted by AK Press).
They are invaluable for any reader concerned with the place of the Spanish Revolution in history and with the accomplishments, insights and failings of the anarchosyndicalist movements.

In direct contrast with its persistence in Spain, the revolutionary anarchosyndicalist program of workers' control and development of the means of production in their unions dwindled in France during the first decades of the twentieth century.
In Spain, significantly, the reverse occurred: the growth of UGT radicalism during the Second Republic, and especially in 1936, mirrored the rise of a revolutionary temper among key sectors of peasants and workers.
Replacing the old anarchosyndicalist demand for workers' control of the means of production was a call for state control, since the Left believed that it could ensure more efficient production and fairer distribution through command of government.

As though we were all sitting adoringly at the feet of Ernest Mandel, Heider cries that I distort Marx when I suggest that (in her paraphrase) he "proposed to subject nature to man in the manner of a patriarch, thus despiritualizing not only labor, but also the product of labor, the commodity" (p.
He regarded it as a "malicious defamation," she observes approvingly, to accuse the CNT leadership of discarding its anarchosyndicalist principles when it entered the Madrid and Catalan governments and the FAI of turning into an expressly electoral party machine (p.

We will continue to argue for the ideas and methods of anarchosyndicalism, which we believe is the best way forward for workers to confront and overcome the monster that is capitalism, and replace it with a system run by and for workers on anarchosyndicalist principles.
