Anastasia (1956 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anastasia is a 1956 film which tells the true story of a young, confused woman in France after the Russian Revolution who, backed by the Russian emigre community, attempts to pass herself off as Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, the daughter of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia.
A central part of the film seems to be that the Dowager Empress is convinced that the young woman is her grand-daughter, and she is not a character who is easily fooled.
The movie was adapted by Guy Bolton and Arthur Laurents from the play by Marcelle Maurette.

 Anastasia (1956)
The movie opens with a text preface about the end of tsarist Russia in 1917 and the execution of the royal family in 1918.
Most of the movie follows the attempts to convince various folks — and the audience — that Anna is Anastasia.
While the movie never strongly tells us yes or no, it seems to lean toward the “yes” side of the coin; for the purposes of the film, it hints to the audience that Anna and Anastasia were one and the same.

THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- ANASTASIA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
ANASTASIA ($20) is a wonderful classic movie that brims with romanticism and a great deal of old style Hollywood flair.
Because of her striking resemblance to the Czar’s youngest daughter, and the persistent rumors that the Grand Duchess Anastasia survived a Bolshevik firing squad in 1918, Bounine wants to use Anna as part of a plot to liberate a ten million pound inheritance from the Bank of England.
Also included on the DVD is the AandE Biography program Anastasia: Her True Story, as well as Movietone Newsreel footage of the film’s twin movie premieres, Ingrid Bergman award clips and footage of the Romanov family, as well as separate footage of the Czar in 1907.

 Anastasia - Movie Review
Bounin is seeking a woman to impersonate Grand Duchess Anastasia, the daughter of the murdered Tsar of Russia who has long been rumoured to have survived the revolution, in order to claim a substantial inheritance.
'Anastasia' is a romantic fantasy rather than an accurate historical piece, and on that level it is spectacular.
DVD Extras: In the UK, 'Anastasia' is available on a stand-alone budget DVD or as part of a two-disc set with another Ingrid Bergman film 'The Inn of the Sixth Happiness'.

The 1956 movie takes place years later in Paris, with a con artist's attempt to train a fake Anastasia to reap the lavish reward offered by the surviving Romanovs.
In their version, Anastasia is indeed the princess (credit that 1990s phenomenon, repressed memory syndrome), but they maintained the two principals' journeys of self-discovery.
The film's charm lies in its look: There's a thrilling train wreck; Anastasia moves with the appropriate assurance of a young woman who does not realize her own grace; Dimitri's desperate con is reflected in well-observed tics; and the dance sequences are stunning.

 Anastasia (1956) - Review - Piddleville
The story of the Romanovs itself is a hodge podge of fact and folk tale (including the character of Rasputin), but one of the most enduring of the myths was that of Anastasia, the Tsar’s youngest daughter.
The movie is an intriguing, sumptuous production starring Ingrid Bergman as Anastasia in a wonderfully precise performance, though a bit stagey in some instances.
Rather than do a story about the lost daughter trying to regaining her identity and place, it focuses on the characters who are trying to foist a false Anastasia on everyone and thereby falsely claim the Romanov millions.

 filmcritic.com Movie Review: Anastasia (1956)
This is the earlier, and definitely not animated, version of the story of the hunt for Anastasia Romanov, daughter of the Tsar who, according to legend, was the only member of the royal family to survive their massacre by revolutionaries in 1917.
Anastasia starts off in the late 1920s among the exiled White Russian community in Paris, who rather obsessively keep their country’s customs alive in a foreign place.
What is unfortunate about the film – and the probable reason why Fox amped everything up, including the addition of Rasputin, for Don Bluth’s animated 1997 version – is its staginess (the script was adapted from a play) and lack of momentum.

And even after Anastasia's acceptance by her grandmother, the ending seems artificial and rushed, as if the director ran out of patience and yelled 'cut' prematurely.

Ingrid Bergman gives one of her memorable, haunting, and haunted performances as an amnesiac chosen by a White Russian general (Yul Brynner) in 1928 to play the part of Anastasia, the long-rumored but missing survivor of the Bolsheviks' murderous attack on the czar's family.
Brynner was also to receive an Oscar in 1956, not for this film, but for "The King and I." Also marvelous is Helen Hayes as the Dowager Empress Maria, who in a moving scene is brought to believe that Anna is truly Anastasia.
The DVD should be re-released with improved sound, because it is unacceptable as is, and it is a pity such a lovely film has been marred by an unintelligible voice track (which incidentally, sounds fine in the portions with the commentary that one can hear).

Anastasia is a cleverly written and sumptiously-mounted fantasy version of one of the 20th century's more persistent mysteries, the idea that one of Czar Nicholas'es children, Anastasia, could have been spared execution with her family, and somehow end up a lost amnesiac on the streets of Paris.
More famous than the movie itself was the confident return to bigscreen stardom by Ingrid Bergman, who had been the subject of a media lynching six years earlier for leaving her husband and family to run off with Italian director Roberto Rossellini.
The historical Anastasia claimant couldn't even speak Russian, but she had half of Europe and a lot of gullible Americans convinced she was the genuine article.

Most interesting is the A&E Biography episode devoted to Anastasia; most of the first half is devoted to the real (brief) life of the Grand Duchess, while the balance is devoted to Anna Anderson and her claims.

Trivia: This movie was based on the story of Anna Anderson, a woman who claimed to be the Grand Duchess Anastasia.
It was later discovered that, in fact, she was not who she claimed to be; the mystery was solved through DNA examination of a small piece of tissue cut from Anna in an operation years before.
It is at times too talkative, a bit rushed in the execution and the ending is relatively weak, but for the larger part this is great entertainment and high quality film-making.

Based on the legend of the real-life daugher of the last Russian czar, ANASTASIA combines imaginative animation and lively songs to tell the story of a princess who escapes a horrible execution and mysteriously reappears after being thought dead.
But the resurgence of the long-lost Anastasia also attracts the attention of the scary Rasputin (Christopher Lloyd), who, with his hilarious sidekick, Bartok the bat (Hank Azaria), schemes to do in the last Romanov.
Though much lighter (thankfully for children) than the 1956 Anatole Litvak-directed ANASTASIA adapted from Marcelle Maurette's play, this movie is still packed with thrills, chills, and romance.
